Gym employee makes a powerful statement before quitting disrespectful workplace, garners huge support

As much as compensation and potential advancenment motivates employees to do better in their jobs, workplace culture matters a lot too. Sometimes, all it takes for a company to lose a valuable employees is poor management and disrespect. One great example of this was shared recently by a gym employee, u/Toastedpossum, on Reddit. Posting a picture of her resignation letter that she sent to the gym owner last Sunday, the woman let the world know how unfair her workplace treated her. She was worried about bailing earlier than she was supposed to but hundreds of reassuring comments poured in.

Initially, the employee decided to give a two-week notice before quitting by the end of February so that the owner had ample time to replace her. But the manager's disrespect and the owner's nonchalance got her to forsake the job instantly. In a recent meeting with her manager and owner, the employee was humiliated by the manager who called her, "the biggest f**k up here." Despite her having maintained her sense of decorum in the workplace, she couldn't take such disrespect. In her post,  she pointed out how this kind of despicable treatment was a frequent occurrence. 

"My God, to allow a co-worker - let alone a manager - to speak to an employee this way. Even if they claim to be joking, I could not fathom this as a leader," she wrote expressing her disbelief. The employee then made a strong statement saying, "I understand you have years of experience in the fitness industry, but I have years of experience in another sector - the United States Army, an industry forged by respect." Her experience spoke volumes while putting forward the workplace woes she faced. Pointing out that the manager was narcissistic, lazy and a bully, the employee asked the gym owner to sort out the issue before more employees left.

On top of the bullying manager, the work schedule and unprofessional communication also bothered the employee. "How could we possibly be expected to communicate with you effectively when you refuse to communicate with us?" asked the employee. Also, the employee was asked to 'care more' about the gym during a recent incident where the owner unrealistically expected her to do an unsanitary task. "The truth is I care too much about this gym," she wrote, sharing that the "care more" comments crushed her. "Hopefully, you'll understand in a few weeks when you realize what a gym really looks like without care," she wrote. Asking the owner to mail her last paycheck, the employee bid goodbye to the disrespectful workplace.

As the employee wondered if she did the right thing, people were quick to give her much-needed encouragement. "Good for you. Letters like these are more of the sender than the recipient, but I’m glad you were brave to say your piece and remove yourself from the situation. On to better!" commented u/Raven_Writing. "Love this letter and it doesn’t matter if they read the entire thing or if it’s 'too emotional.' You gotta speak your mind sometimes and stand up for yourself when no one around you is going to help," wrote u/Description-Alert. "Glad you left, but don’t spend your energy writing a letter like this again. Just leave. They don’t deserve the effort of this letter," pointed out u/FxTree-CR2.
