Frustrated, the guest walked to McDonald's to satiate her growling belly.
An Indian woman took to Reddit to share a strange norm she witnessed at a wedding. Accustomed to being generously fed as a wedding guest in her own culture, she was shocked to find herself without food simply because she was a plus-one. The Indian originally shared her story on October 5, 2026. Later, an anonymous user (u/YchYFi) shared it again after it was deleted. The repost has since received over 7,000 upvotes on Reddit.
At a Wedding Dinner Plus Ones are told to wait in the Main Hall while family and close friends ate.

“In my culture, we are used to an abundance of food being served constantly, like biryani, butter chicken, naan, and endless snacks like samosas and sweets like barfi. Absolutely everyone is fed, no matter how distantly related,” the woman described in the post. She added that she has attended countless weddings with her friends, but had never experienced such discrimination. In this wedding, she was the plus-one of the bride’s sister. While attending the ceremony, she noticed that plus-ones were not allowed at the wedding dinner.

While the author waited in the main hall, the bride and groom's family and friends enjoyed the dinner. Since she was starving, she left the venue with another plus-one to grab a snack from the local McDonald's. Afterwards, she asked the bride’s sister about the strange norm at British weddings. "She told me that this 'split day' system is the norm in several European countries, and she specifically claimed it happens a lot in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and especially in the UK," the author recounted.
Although there is no clear evidence that this tradition is followed in all British weddings, the rising cost of hosting a wedding may help explain it. According to Wedding Spot, weddings with buffet-style receptions typically cost $50 to $100 per guest. Accommodating plus-ones will likely lead to unexpected food costs, last-minute event expenses, and additional service fee charges. Additionally, as Investopedia’s survey revealed, even a wedding cost at least $38,800, which means couples might want to cut down plus-ones from the dinner to scale back the costs.

Meanwhile, viewers were just as shocked to hear about the bizarre norm, and most agreed that it was not something any guest should have to face. For example, u/Emotional_Ruin_8999 shared, “I'm in the UK, and it is definitely not a thing here; everyone gets fed. Cash bars are the norm, though.” Similarly, u/stoodincrap added, “As someone from the UK, this does not happen a lot; I’ve never even heard of this as an option!” u/Couch_potato_1182 said, “As an Indian, I’m absolutely horrified. Our life goal is to feed as many people as possible. I can’t imagine my guests (close or distant) leaving hungry from my place/events.”
