Wedding vows are the centerpiece of most weddings in America. The younger generation, especially, dedicates special attention to the ceremony by shunning the traditional vows and writing their own. Both bride and groom spend hours brainstorming a poetic verse that would make their significant other feel truly special. Louisiana wedding photographer Kari Jo (@karijo.co) shared a similar heartwarming moment in which a bride teared up as her groom surprised her with an unexpected promise before saying, 'I do.' Shared on May 3, the emotional video has gone viral with 750,000 views on Instagram.
Words mean a lot in a relationship. In fact, they can pave the pathway and lead the couple towards their happily ever after. With teary eyes, the groom grabbed the opportunity to promise a lifetime of togetherness until his last breath. "I only ask you for one promise," he told the bride, "that you let me go out of this world before you because there’s no possible way I could live on this planet without you.” Standing on one side of a wall while the bride stood on the other, he requested, "Just put a picture of you in my pocket so when I get to heaven, I can show you off to everyone."

With emotion clearly welling up in his voice, he wrapped up the speech by expressing his love for his partner. He confessed, "I love you now, I loved you then, and I will love you forever." A montage of their wedding clips played in the background of his voiceover, painting a surreal, romantic episode.
In America, the wedding vow exchange is one of the most intimate and cherished traditions, and many couples choose to write their own promises. According to The Knot Worldwide’s 2026 Real Weddings Study, approximately 2 million couples tied the knot in the U.S. in 2025, with around 61% writing their own wedding vows, signaling a move towards intentional, customized ceremonies. In fact, sometimes couples are so conscious about getting their vows right that they sometimes take professional help.

Mindy Weiss, a professional wedding planner, estimates that nearly 80% of couples write their own wedding vows. "Sometimes I have speech writers that will help them, or sometimes I’m the one helping. If you’re part of the other 20%, hiring a third party can be one of the best decisions you’ll make along the way — especially when there are so many details that go into wedding planning," she told Brides.
Meanwhile, people turned emotional watching the beautiful moment; for instance, @startrekker180 said, "No, I'd rather go after her because I know the pain of losing a loved one, and there's no way I'm letting her go through that for me." Similarly, @douglastaylor129 commented, "It's like a soldier going off to war would say and do…"
