What's more important than love in a relationship? Well, of course, it is trust, commitment, and all that jazz, but the most important thing is how much your partner listens and remembers what you say. When Matt Mahatme (@mattmahatme) from Norwich, England, started dating Hattie, his now-wife, she told him she'd never gotten a love letter. A decade later, he surprised her with one on their wedding, making the day even more special. The man posted it on TikTok on November 22 and has over 500K views.

Hattie, on her 21st birthday, had told Mahatme that she had never received a love letter before. He loved her, and fulfilling her wish was something he knew he had to do. Mahatme wrote her a love letter, but didn't give it to her right away. In fact, he waited for 10 long years before reading it out to the whole world at their wedding. "Hattie, if I am reading you this, it means it's our wedding day, or I have died... gutted," the opening lines of his love letter read. Mahatme had celebrated Hattie's 21st birthday with her family, and in his letter, he mentioned how it was an amazing experience spending time with all of them. He recalled how Hattie's dad mentioned all her good qualities, and everyone around nodded in agreement. "Seeing that many people look at you in the same way I do was when I realized this is who I want to spend forever with," Mahatme added.

He was very young when he started dating Hattie, but since then, he'd made a promise to himself that he would love and take care of her despite the obstacles in life. "As when I read this to you, you will be my wife," he read. Everyone, including the bride, was in tears, listening to Mahatme. The groom had mentioned his firsts with his wife, Hattie, in the letter, but in his wedding speech, he promised to share his lasts with her. He said, "I want every last one of mine to be with you, my last adventure, my last laugh, and my last breath," while struggling to hold back his tears.

@mattmahatme For everyone that requested the full letter from my speech here you go! Thank you so much @Strefford Films for capturing our day. #weddingspeech #groom #loveletter #weddingday ♬ original sound - Matt Mahatme 👁️

While writing love letters may feel like a thing of the past, some people love going overboard to make their loved ones feel special, like Mahatme. In fact, a survey by Ipsos found that 58% of Americans prefer a personalized, hand-written note when it comes to receiving or giving a gift. This means that whether it's a love letter, a personalized gift, or a simple handwritten note, couples often appreciate it more than extravagant gestures. People loved the man's speech! Some shared their own experiences with love, while others praised the groom and congratulated the couple for their new beginnings. For instance, @stolensoul999 commented, "He didn't even start reading, and I was tearing up."

@thankyouconsequence shared, "I’m so glad this appeared in my FYP. I met my soon-to-be ex-husband at Durham when we were 18. 14 years on, we have two beautiful children, but sadly, he chose to have an affair, which I found out about 6 months ago. Since then, I've felt pretty cynical about whether real love and good men exist, despite being a lifelong romantic at heart. If the person you’ve spent your entire adulthood with can still betray you, what hope is there for someone new? But this video, and your speech, have helped me restore my faith. Thank you so much for your vulnerability in all of this, and I wish you both a wonderful life together. Good luck!" @mariaannecole wrote, "We need more of this. This generation is so awful for love. This is really beautiful!"
