A former teacher called them four years after their mother passed to share something they had never known.
A mother’s love is uncanny — she always puts her children first, never thinking twice about her own needs. However, there are some mothers who venture beyond the well-being of their own children, extending their warmth to any kid seeking emotional shelter. One person learned of their mother's generosity four years after she had passed, and the truth left an indelible mark on them. The story was shared by u/ApprehensiveCount597, who posted about a phone call they weren’t expecting.
As a child, the user had gone to a private school where many students came from wealthy families, and some, whose parents could barely afford rent, were put on scholarships. Several years after the user's mother had passed, a former teacher reached out to them. "She'd just found my number through other people," the user wrote in the post. "She told me about how my mom would show up to the office on field trip days for mine and my sister's classes, she'd ask for the teacher, and then she'd ask how many kids were staying behind because they couldn't pay. Then she'd cover their fees." The ticket price, usually ranging between $5–$10, often went up to "$50–$100 per kid," making it a large non-mandatory expense that most struggling parents passed on.
The user said that their mother "also [had] the teachers call her if a parent couldn't afford school supplies or a required book... she'd buy it and have the teacher give it to them privately." When a student’s birthday was coming up and their parents hadn’t arranged for cake — something the school required advance notice for — she stepped in. Her standard request was that the teacher "email her the night before," so she could grab cupcakes from the bakery near her apartment and drop them at the school in the morning. The user recalled, "She'd always told me the parents ordered them and asked her to pick them up."
Some may think this counts as charity, but for her it was never about the money — protecting the kids' future was of far more importance. She told teachers she did it so "no kid would feel left out" because "she was always the financially excluded child growing up and knew how it could negatively impact their education." The story resonated deeply with many, and they expressed their utmost love and respect for the mother. Some, who knew what these behind-the-scenes actions meant, acknowledged her efforts, highlighting their longlasting impact. u/McMema wrote, "As one of the poor kids who went to an expensive, private school and quite often could not afford extracurricular activities and supplies, your mom did a beautiful thing. I can tell you from my own experience that these small kindnesses made a world of difference for these children. Thank you."
u/Airalahs added, "This made me bawl my eyes out OMG. Your mom was a beautiful person. I am so sorry for your loss. I was one of the poor kids growing up whose parents couldn't afford all the extras. I would have been forever indebted to your mom." u/JusticeAyo said, "I’m sorry for your loss. Your mother sounds like an amazing woman. It must be inspiring to know that she was so giving and humble — to always have children in mind who were less fortunate." u/manmorgola wrote, "I’m a man in 60s, crying sitting in my cubicle, reading your post and beautiful comments. Your mom’s a saint in my books and [a] very strong-willed person at the same time. You should feel blessed and proud to be part of such a great soul." u/Spectator7778 said, "Thank you for sharing this. How lucky those kids were to be gifted that dignity of being part of the community."
