She recognized the voice in an instant and completely broke down.
A person might give anything to see or hear their loved ones once again after their demise. However, such a thing may not be possible for most people. But a grandma named Asunción Estevan Chico got that lucky chance when she heard her deceased father's voice once again after 30 years with the help of an old tape and tape recorder, as reported by PEOPLE. Chico's emotional reaction to listening to her father was recorded and shared by her granddaughter Irene Patón Reig, who goes by @irenepaton on TikTok.
After hearing her father's voice, Chico was visibly happy. The family played the recording for her while she listened through a headset. The recording featured a man speaking in Spanish, and Chico pointed at herself, expressing that the voice was her father's. She smiled widely when her father started singing A Flor de Piel, a song by Julio Iglesias. Soon enough, Chico was singing along with her dad. Towards the end, she was on the verge of tears as her granddaughter removed her headset. You could see how much listening to her late father sing meant to her.
"I wasn’t expecting it. I felt immense joy, excitement, and the urge to cry, thinking I would never hear him again in my life," Chico told the outlet. Reig's mother discovered an old tape labeled "Blas Estevan" when she was going through her mother's belongings. The family could hear its contents because of a tape recorder bought from Germany. She discovered it was her grandfather, who was known for his love of music and poetry. "He cared deeply for all of us and always loved dedicating songs and poetry to us," the grandma recounted.
"I listened to the tape before my grandmother did and I was completely shocked because I had no idea it existed. I loved hearing my great-grandfather sing and I knew my grandmother would love the surprise. I cried with her when I saw how emotional she was," Reig expressed. "They told me they had a surprise for me and I told them I didn’t want any surprises! But when I found out what it was, I told them they had given me the greatest gift of my life," the grandma remarked. Her favorite memory with her father is sitting on his shoulders as they walked on the beach of Alicante, Spain.
Meanwhile, Irene told the outlet, “Many people say it’s the most beautiful video they’ve ever seen." She described how people in the comments "now want to record their loved ones’ voices so they never forget them." People in the comments loved the beautiful gift from the family and compared the grandmom's moment to the one in the movie "Coco" by Pixar Animation Studios.
@jaffanierojas wrote, "This reminds me of the grandma scene in the movie 'Coco.' God bless her." @esteban_bche commented, "Miguel would have done this for Mamá Coco... and not had to fight with De La Cruz over his great-great-grandfather's photo. That's how he remembered." @ornelaguerra remarked, "It reminds me of the movie 'Coco' when Mama Coco hears her father's song."
