The treasure felt like 'one last gift' from their late grandma

A person who started staying at their grandma's house after her death accidentally discovered something incredibly astonishing while fixing her old armchair. Well, it all began when their cat damaged the seating furniture by continuously scratching on it from beneath. Determined to fix their grandma's cherished armchair, the grandchild finally decided to fix the furniture — unaware that it would lead them to a secret family treasure. The person, who goes by u/g0fren on Reddit, shared the story on April 18. So far, the post has received 1.5K upvotes on their page.

After Grandma's death, the person who inherited her apartment moved in and replaced everything except for her old armchair. Now, the new owner had a cat who perhaps did not like the old furniture and continued scratching it until the damage became noticeable. The grandkid loved the armchair and wanted to retain it, so they finally decided to fix it, unaware that their decision would lead to an unexpected discovery. "I tilted the chair to check the damage, and suddenly a bundle wrapped in old newspapers just fell out...," they recalled.
The grandkid opened it, certain they would find random stuff inside, but what they saw instead left them gasping in awe. "...there was around 500 dollars, my grandma’s gold earrings with rubies, and a letter my grandpa had written to her when she was in the hospital after giving birth to my mom," the person shared. Overwhelmed, they started reading the letter and realized their grandma never had the opportunity to tell them about the hidden treasure. "...honestly, it wasn’t even about the money at all; it felt like one last gift from her. She always loved me, and somehow it felt like she still found a way to show it one more time," they concluded.

Forget valuables; people go above and beyond imagination to hide even the holiday presents. For instance, take the survey (by Neighbor Blog) of 1,000 Americans, where it was found that more than half of Americans (53%) prefer hiding their presents in the bedroom closet. Similarly, the survey revealed that while 31.5% hide gifts in a spare room, 26% prefer the coat closet, and another 26% use the space under the bed. In fact, some respondents (9%) even confessed to hiding the holiday gifts in the bathroom. Now, the grandma in the Reddit story, who loved her armchair, must have hidden the treasure inside, thinking it was the safest place that nobody but she had access to.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Reddit stories, u/sinskins commented, "Look, 'I’m not superstitious, but I am pretty stitious' (quote by Michael Scott on 'The Office'), and I’m absolutely certain that Grandma and your sweet cat had a conversation about this. What a beautiful find. I know you say she always loved you, but I want you to know you have no idea how deeply that love goes. She loves you more than any words could say. Also, give your cat some extra treats and snuggles; they’ve earned it." Similarly, u/shamanbirdbird shared, "Think of all the other hidden treasures you binned. Old people tend to hide lots of things all over the place. I hope you checked every item thoroughly. Glad you found these!"
