Gordon Ramsay congratulated a couple dining at his restaurant — then realized he hadn’t proposed yet

Reluctant to disturb the romantic couple, the celebrity chef went to congratulate them anyway, but time wasn't on his side.

When it comes to your proposal, you want every detail to be executed perfectly. Back in 2016, a man had planned a proposal for his girlfriend at Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant, reported The Telegraph. In an interview at the “Vegas Uncork’d” Food and Wine Festival in the U.S., the chef revealed that instead of adding to their special moment, he accidentally ruined it. Speaking with host Michael Parkinson, the chef revealed that he has made his fair share of mistakes, one of which was congratulating a couple on their proposal before the man could even pop the question — all due to some miscommunication.

Ramsay mentioned that when it comes to cooking, handling a restaurant, and his career in general, he has made mistakes. However, his secret has always been to “keep mistakes in the kitchen.” So no matter what goes on, you don’t get it out and make a big deal out of it. Unfortunately, this one instance didn’t quite restrict itself to the pots and pans. The chef received information from his maître d' that a couple at one of the tables had announced their engagement. They had also ordered a seven-course meal and were heading to dessert.

The chef asked to send over some champagne as a gesture, and as suggested, thought it would be nice if he could personally congratulate the couple. “I don't mind going to the dining room, but I don't like standing there,” he confessed, adding that guests are often in a romantic mood and into themselves throughout their time there. Nevertheless, as an act of professionalism and etiquette, he went over. He welcomed the couple and said, “Great news, fantastic. You've even booked a room here, that's lovely. Congratulations.”

Instead of smiles and excitement, he was met with stares and confusion. The man had not yet popped the question. Needless to say, their perfect plan was ruined. Unsure how to react to the situation, he eventually left the room as soon as possible. A study by Dr. Lisa Hoplock, published by Luvze, revealed that 69% of respondents said they wanted to have a private proposal where it's just the two of them. Among the top locations for the event, restaurants ranked third, with homes coming in second, and the beach or waters coming in first.

Though many couples plan the day to the T, data from Study Finds noted that only 2 in 5 couples rated their proposal as perfect. Of 2,000 women surveyed, only 50% said they wouldn’t change a thing about their big moment. 35% said they would like to change the location of their proposal for different reasons. Even the type of ring picked out, the way the person offered the ring, etc., were likely to be tweaked by quite a few. A major reason is the evolving trend in engagements and proposals, but there were likely other reasons too, possibly ones like being accidentally snitched on before popping the question. While there has been no information on how the proposal went thereafter, we certainly hope things worked out!
