Trust plays an important role in a relationship, but when a man tried to test his girlfriend's loyalty, the girlfriend responded in a way that now makes him regret his decision. Sharing the update on Reddit, u/gauntletthrowaway's re-post from December 1 has garnered over 8,000 likes.

In 2015, 21-year-old u/gauntletthrowaway had been dating a 24-year-old guy, Sam, for over 3 months. After they decided to make it official, Sam introduced his girlfriend to his friends. "Sam's awesome, and his friends seem awesome too... or so I thought," the author wrote. The couple, along with her boyfriend's friends, decided to hang out and have a good time at his place. When Sam left the room, his friends began talking ill of her boyfriend in front of her. The author was angry at their behavior, and despite being asked to join them, she refused and informed them that she would tell Sam about their badmouthing him later. "They were ragging on his appearance, calling him a loser, etc, and it made me very uncomfortable. They tried to get me to join in, and I kept brushing them off. They persisted, so I finally told them to knock it off and informed them that I would be telling Sam all of this," she wrote.

Later, when Sam came back, the author walked out of the room, and when later confronted by her boyfriend, she informed him about what his friends were talking about behind his back. However, Sam's reaction threw her off. "He grinned. I asked him what he was smiling about, and that's when he told me the following: Apparently, they do this with every girl Sam meets to test her and see if she'll talk shit about him behind his back. If she does, he dumps her. If not, hooray. Sam's in on it, and says it's pretty harmless. He says I'm the first girl to have told him about what happened, which means I'm the best...?"

While she wanted to believe that it was a harmless prank, Reddit users informed her that her boyfriend lacked maturity. In a follow-up post, the author revealed that she spoke to her boyfriend, which culminated in him defending his stance. "The climax was him calling me a bitch for not being grateful that I had passed his stupid test. At that point I just said 'Yeah, it's over, I may have passed your test, but you failed mine' and I walked away. He tried to blow up my phone but I nipped that in the bud by blocking him," she wrote. A 2015 study by Lindsey M. Rodriguez noted that higher levels of distrust, especially among people with an anxious attachment style, were linked to more negative thoughts about the relationship, greater jealousy, and lower overall relational well-being. By using his friends to test his girlfriend's loyalty, the man failed to trust his girlfriend and relied on a prank to justify his actions.

Following the post going viral, many users hailed the woman for standing her ground. u/master_hakka wrote, "'You don’t lie to people to gain the truth' is a solid bomb to drop!" u/MargotFenring commented, "Who could have foreseen that the girlfriend with the best morals and ethics is not comfortable with being conspired against and deceived?" u/thexiaovillage wrote, "My personal relationship rule is: if you don't trust me enough, you have no business being in a relationship with me. Testing my feelings or characters is 100% dealbreaker. OOP did well by ditching Sam and his imbecile friends."
