A miserable cycle
The relationship began during Cassidy's sophomore year and quickly became her "first love." However, the high school romance soon turned sour as the couple mirrored each other's negative traits. Seeking an exit strategy, 16-year-old Cassidy admitted to cheating on her boyfriend after texting a guy she previously insisted he shouldn't "worry about." Following this, as she expected, the relationship fractured, compounded by the boyfriend's habit of blaming Cassidy for his own trouble, specifically regarding drug paraphernalia found by her mother.
The brief reconciliation
By late summer, the pair fell into an on-again, off-again pattern. Despite the boyfriend briefly dating someone else in July that year, Cassidy convinced him to reunite. But that wasn't a good idea, as their second attempt at the relationship lasted only three weeks, culminating during their first anniversary. Nonetheless, when she was barred from attending a Friday night football game due to academic struggles, she spiraled into a state of intense anxiety, driving to her boyfriend's house unannounced despite being banned from the premises.
A calculated deception
That Friday night, Cassidy was paralyzed by a "gut feeling" that he would betray her. "I had no reason to believe he was going to cheat on me that night, but I was crashing out, begging him not to go to the game," she said. Weeks later at the Homecoming dance, Cassidy spotted a group of girls, one of whom was the person her ex had been with that night at Waffle House. Trusting her intuition, she approached the girls and bluntly asked, "Is there something you should tell me about my ex-boyfriend?" It was then that the girl silently admitted that they had been together. Sarah was shocked and struggling to maintain her composure.
