Being a woman can be beautiful, but womanhood brings unique challenges that often intensify with age. While many people, including men, want to support and uplift women, they might not always know the best ways to do so. A viral Reddit post by a 19-year-old user, u/steph_honey, shares practical and impactful advice on how men can better support the women in their lives.
The post emphasizes the importance of empathy, urging men to call out and discourage sexist remarks and confront people when they make such comments. “It’s non-negotiable to let distasteful comments slide,” she wrote, encouraging men to hold others accountable. She also advised men to genuinely listen to women, noting how, in a patriarchal society, women's voices are often overlooked. She highlighted the importance of paying attention when a woman speaks and supporting her to raise her voice if she needs to be heard.
The girl addressed the significance of letting a woman speak her heart out loud. Moreover, she also shared how helping women connect with people of shared "experience" and "knowledge" gives them the confidence to address their issues and find solutions. The 19-year-old girl also talked about the benefits of connecting to strong support systems and resources for particularly addressing topics like reproductive health needs, especially when traditional or official channels may be restricted.
Keeping in mind the current scenario of abortion laws, the girl urged people to support single mothers whenever and in whatever ways they can. "Helping out where you can for mothers and children will not only help them but ultimately the future," she added. Besides, the teen girl talked about how an increase in single moms with "depression" not just negatively affects the nurturing women but also their children. She penned, "More children are going to be born to people who don't want them/can't care for them/can hardly support themselves, meaning a lot of children are gonna have mental/physical issues throughout their lives and into adulthood." Talking elaborately about the need of the hour - awareness regarding reproductive health and sex education, the 19-year-old spoke about educating people about "consent", "safe sex," "sexual coercion" and most importantly "respecting boundaries."
Expressing her wisdom at such a tender age, the girl penned, "Teach children about their bodies (in an age-appropriate way) so they can understand things like signs of assault and what to do if they’re uncomfortable. Teach young people about why things like abortion are necessary for people’s health." The post went viral with people showering praises on the young girl for her ultimate guiding tips to help women grow and prosper. u/DecentNap wrote, "This is such a fantastic list, thank you! Reading and researching feminist literature and essays is also very valuable in gaining a deeper understanding."
Suggesting another way for men to support women around them, u/DryCloud9903 spoke about mentoring young boys and setting an example for them. "Boys look up to other men. If they don’t have a father at home who’s respectful of others, they’ll copy him. But sometimes another decent man they see as an example could make the world of difference. Be that man," the individual concluded. These thoughtful suggestions from a 19-year-old teenage girl offer concrete ways for men to stand up for women's rights and make the world a better place for them for sure.
