The birthday getaway was supposed to cost $400 per person. Then the price jumped to $750, and the explanation only raised more questions

Money can complicate even the closest friendships. Different budgets, spending habits and expectations can quickly turn a fun plan into an uncomfortable conversation—especially when someone changes the cost after everyone has already agreed to it. In a July 21, 2026 Reddit post, a woman (u/20Luc1a02) shared the episode of her friend Priya’s birthday party. Initially, everything was good and exciting, but then Priya unfairly increased the per-person cost without even asking the girls. This triggered friction in their friendship, and the woman was forced to think whether she should be a part of her birthday celebration at all.
A or B: My friend planned a group trip and told everyone it'd be $400. Two days before we leave, the price went up to $750. She says it's non-negotiable

The incident took place in January when Priya reached out to seven of her friends with the news of her 30th birthday celebration. She told them that the cost per person would be $400. A lake house with a stocked kitchen was booked in upstate New York for three nights, with a chef for one night. For the next couple of days, Priya kept the girls updated on the bookings, details of the itinerary, and packing list. But with just 11 days to go for the trip, she sprung a surprise, and unfortunately, a disappointing one.

Out of nowhere, Priya informed the girls that the updated cost had turned out to be $750, not $400. She excused this cost by explaining that two additional girls were joining the trip, so she had to book a bigger house. This house required an additional $500 of security deposit. The woman stared at her message open-mouthed. Even if the house was bigger, by no means could the cost soar that high because there were now more members to split the bill too. The numbers still didn't make sense to her, and she was certain that the bill couldn’t be $750 per person. Plus, the security deposit was supposed to be a temporary amount, which would be returned to Priya once they returned.
Worse still, Priya informed her that she had already put everything on her credit card and made the commitment, without asking the girls. So, 11 days before the trip, this woman was left in a dilemma: whether to pay the amount and save her friendship or to let go of the $150 advance she had paid and get together for a dinner sometime later. The second option, however, would surely put knots in their friendship.

Money can become a source of tension even in close relationships. According to a study conducted by Bread Financial, 21% of the surveyed individuals have "lost a friendship over money." 65% said they have disregarded their budget for social activities with friends. 39% confessed to spending more than intended on friends’ birthday celebrations to keep the relationship alive. Another survey by Monkey Travel reported that, according to 46% of the surveyed travelers, "money disagreements are the single biggest source of stress when traveling with friends."

Most of the readers sided with the second option, saying that the woman shouldn’t go on the birthday trip without seeing all the receipts. u/Goblintohobgoblin commented, “B for sure. If the price genuinely went up, that's fine. But she should be able to show receipts in that case. It's also pretty messed up to almost double the price everyone agreed to without asking people.” u/Jewish-Mom-123 said, “You deserve your deposit back, and she shows the receipts. And you respond to her only in the group chat where everyone can see it. She is absolutely scamming all of you for her own birthday.”
