'If kept in my bedroom, it can treat insomnia and anxiety. The direction of placing the tortoise is also very important,' she explains in her presentation.
Kids can go to any extent to get what they want. And pets are something that most children would love to have. However, it is not always easy to convince parents on the matter. A 13-year-old girl made a 23-slides PowerPoint presentation on why the family should have a tortoise as a pet. Author Matthew Horton took to Twitter to share pictures of what his daughter tried to convey to them through the presentation.
"Let the tortoise meeting commence!!!" states the first slide along with two adorable pictures of tortoises. In another slide titled "Can I keep a tortoise in my bedroom?" she explains: "If kept in my bedroom, it can treat insomnia and anxiety. The direction of placing the tortoise is also very important. A tortoise is considered auspicious in Chinese as well as Hindi mythology. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu's second avatar, the Kurma Avatar was in the form of a tortoise."
She also informs her family of the enclosure necessities for the tortoise, which include UV lights. "With UV lights, for tortoises, the link below should help with understanding what the pet needs and how to give it what it needs," reads one slide. The other necessities that are highlighted are indoor and outdoor housing, food and water bowls, hides, a humid area, a thermometer, calcium and vitamin supplements, tortoise food, a tub for bathing, a water mister to help maintain humidity and overnight heating (if required).
The last slide is titled, "Now all that's left to do is buy your tortoise." It reads, "One of the smallest species available are the horsefield tortoises which is why I have been primarily looking into them, and this is an advert for horsefield tortoises."
"It's more reliable to look for adverts made by members who have been on the website for a while as this may mean they are more experienced, according to the website itself," she explains in the slide. She concludes the presentation by asking, "Please may I pay a deposit of £25 so that I can reserve this tortoise? Don't worry, you can still get a full refund on the deposit if you make the decision to not buy one of the beautiful creatures but this is just a safe way of making sure that they won't all disappear before you make a decision."
The Twitter post went viral with 1.8 million views and 14,400 likes. It is captioned, "The 13-year-old has, no word of a lie, made a 23-slide PowerPoint presentation on why we should let her have a tortoise, and exactly what it would involve."
Many on the social media platform were blown away by her presentation and wanted her to have a tortoise. @fieldmusicmusic commented, "This is excellent. She's won me over and now all that's left to do is to buy my tortoise." @jasminedotiwala wrote, "Absolutely a girl after my own heart. I love creating presentations."
"THAT'S how you build a case! She's brilliant," pointed out @jothekendall. @Brennanleffler expressed, "She's done a lot of research, and I especially like how she explains to you what a hyperlink is, you dinosaur." @rappa753 commented, "My GF's little sister (12yo, I think) did the same thing for getting a pet too. Maybe, kids are just born as PowerPoint power users nowadays."
