Most partners share their location to keep tabs on each other's whereabouts throughout the day. But for a 29-year-old woman (u/milly_3334), the check-ins were not consensual. Every time she texted her morning carpool, her 34-year-old boyfriend's phone would chime across the room at the same second. She dismissed his paranoia stemming from his past infidelity until she decided to test the situation. Sitting across from him, she texted a friend asking why he was spying, and his screen lit up instantly. The woman then confronted him and detailed the entire story on March 19, 2020. The Reddit story, which now stands deleted, has received over 3,500 upvotes on the r/bestofredditorupdate subreddit.

The mystery ding

At dawn, around 6:00 AM, the woman, a nurse, noticed that whenever she tapped out a routine note to her carpool, her partner's device beeped at the exact second. The chime seemed reserved for initial conversation, resurfacing whenever she initiated a new exchange after a break. The author suspected her boyfriend had put spyware on her phone. "I feel like this is what past cheating does to a relationship," she explained.

Once, the author was sitting beside her boyfriend when she texted a friend. His phone beeped as usual, but he dismissed it. "I asked him who was messaging him, and he just quickly looked and said work," the author explained. Needing clarity, she waited for an opportunity when his phone rested face-up between them. She fired off a deliberate bait message to a friend. "Why are you spying on my phone?" the author texted. Right on cue, her boyfriend's screen chimed. The timing removed any lingering benefit of the doubt, turning a quiet suspicion into undeniable proof. This caught her partner off guard, as he finally confessed his secret.

The confession

He revealed that he'd intercepted both her private messages and her real-time location. Yet the admission arrived draped in deflection. In classic gaslighting fashion, the boyfriend turned the blame outward, arguing that her lingering wariness over his infidelity made him uneasy. “Don't I want him to be concerned about my safety?” he protested, cloaking covert surveillance as protective care. Left with the fallout of a ruined relationship, she focused on untangling her personal life and digital footprint. A year after her post, the author confirmed that they'd broken up.

The story might surprise you, but many people check their partner's phones without consent. In a YouGov poll, 19% of Americans said they have gone through their partner's phone at least once. Surprisingly, 73% of them don't regret it, while 33% found something they already suspected. The report also found that Millennials were most likely to check a partner's phone without permission.

'Absolutely insane behavior'

Meanwhile, reacting to the Reddit post, u/visionofthefuture wrote, "Damn. I’m glad she figured this out. Absolutely insane behavior. Also crazy for him to have sound push notifications on for his spy app? Dude is crazy and an idiot." At the same time, u/CaptDeliciousPants commented, "It’s so wild how cheaters will treat the betrayed partner like they’re the untrustworthy one. I don’t understand how people can stay with someone after they cheated."
