'It was childhood again...'

When a person is gone, all you have left are the memories. Trevor Rainbolt (@georainbolt), an American social media personality and GeoGuessr player, took to Instagram on September 28, 2026 to share how he reunited a family with lost memories they did not even know existed anymore. He found the camcorder footage in a box of accidentally donated items. He watched the videos and used every single clue he could find to contact the woman who appeared in them as a little girl 25 years earlier. The video garnered 500,000 views, 32,800 likes, and 645 comments.
Trevor Rainbolt is famous for his GeoGuessr videos. It is an online geography game where players guess locations using Google Street View images. Using the same skills, he tracked down the family who lost the camcorder footage. Rainbolt reviewed the footage and found "Christmas mornings, snow days, children playing dress-up, quiet moments together, and children growing up frame by frame." The family had no clue the footage was still out there, which was why Rainbolt made it his mission to reunite them. "So I went looking for them frame by frame, clue by clue, until I found the exact house and found the family. Got in contact with the girl from the tape 25 years later."

Rainbolt and the girl communicated through email exchanges. When she confirmed it was indeed her family, he discovered how meaningful the videos were to her and her brother. Apparently, the man's voice in the clips was their father. He passed away five years ago, and after a long time, she finally heard her dad call out her name one more time. Rainbolt said, "And for a small moment, no time passed at all. It was all Christmas morning again. It was childhood again. It was their dad's voice calling their name one more time."

Cameras and recorders are a huge boon in today's world. They let us preserve memories that could've been forgotten with time. In 2022, a YouGov poll found that 33% of American adults had recorded or documented a conversation with someone to preserve their memories. 47% of the respondents regretted not recording a conversation with a loved one who has passed away. While 27% wished someone would document conversations with them to keep their memories alive, sadly, no one has. For this family, the footage preserved everyday moments together and the sound of their father’s voice. After Rainbolt reunited the family with the footage, the daughter said, "This is extremely valuable to my brother, and I am grateful to have this so very much."

Netizens applauded Rainbolt for choosing to do the right thing and using his skills for good. @colucciojohn wrote, "Thank you for using your skills to benefit humanity, sir." @jwheel5186 added, "Love it when they use their superpowers for good."
