The reason Lucy gave for not wanting to work for the rest of her life didn't go down well with people.
Gen Z employees who are joining the workforce in the post-pandemic world are having a hard time adjusting with several prevalent norms such as shift timings, stress, and even corporate lingo. As several workplace trends ranging from smart to bizarre are making it to social media, a woman claiming that she is 'too pretty' to go to work every day didn't go down well with people online. Lucy, a Gen Z who goes by the name @lucywelcher on TikTok, shared a video in which she was talking about not wanting to work the rest of her life.
In the 8-second video, Lucy can be seen seated in her car wearing a white top. She says, "Does it look like I want to get up at 6 a.m. every fucking day for the next 60 years?" Then she answers her question by saying, “No, I’m too pretty for that,” and sips a drink. She captioned the post, "Not my thing #working #scam." The video garnered 102k views on the social media platform. It sparked a debate in the comments between some who agreed with her and others who criticized her approach.
@ccooncome wrote, "Is this supposed to be a joke?" @headbanger895 expressed, "Honestly, I get where you are coming from but the reality is no one does." @donnann1969 shared, "I agree with you on that. Nobody wants to work their life away. Perhaps find something that you enjoy doing and it won’t be work." @michigangal wrote, "Right 6 am isn't my thing.... that's why I do midnights it's a little more tolerable for me." @andrewcasey186 commented, "Entitled? Going to live with mommy and daddy the rest of your life?" @killerstripe remarked, "This generation is way too lazy." People called the woman "entitled" and "lazy" even after she clarified in response to comments that whatever she said was a joke.
While many didn't find it funny, another TikTok user Mik shared in a video, "Why my generation is so lazy?" and spoke about why both Gen Z and millennials are rethinking traditional work culture. She started the video by saying that she doesn't want to work anymore and asked people to go comment that she is lazy after hearing this. She later admitted that she does want to work because otherwise, she would feel bored. "It helps give you purpose. It helps to give you something to do," she said. Mik then went on to talk about how she feels lucky that she genuinely likes her job.
Next, she shared that the other purpose of working is to be able to pay bills but that's not happening. "We are working 40 to 60 hours a week on average and we cannot afford to live!" she revealed. She conveyed how people in her generation are not paid enough to be able to pay their basic bills. She also addressed the increasing cost of living and how it has gone up by 67% since the 90s. She remarked how people in her generation are working two to three jobs to survive and many people are in severe debt because things are too expensive. Mik summed up her argument by saying all these things have made people from her generation not want to work.
