She shared that it would have been easier if she lived in the city and walked to work but she can't afford that.
Young people have been trying to embrace either entrepreneurship or more creative pursuits instead of 9 to 5 jobs for decades now. But due to the impact of the lockdown and the rise of freelancing and side hustles, Gen Z are having a hard time fitting in with traditional work cultures and existing schedules. Brielle Belly is one such young graduate who is known on TikTok as @briellebelly123, and she shared how her new 9 to 5 job doesn't work for her, through a video on the platform. Her major issue with the eight-hour shift is that she spends most of her time commuting. Belly started the video by saying, "I know I'm probably just being so dramatic and annoying, but this is my first job, like my first 9 to 5 job after college. I'm in person, and I'm commuting in the city, and it takes me forever to get there."
She was quite emotional while talking about her work situation and went on to say that it would have been easier if she lived in the city and walked to work but she can't afford to do so as this is her first job. "I get on the train by 7:30 and I don't get home by 6:15 at the earliest and I don't have time to do anything," the woman pointed out. She continued, "I wanna shower, eat my dinner, and go to sleep. I don't have time or energy to cook my dinner, either." "Like I don't have the energy to work out, that's out the window, I'm so upset!"
She clarified that it has nothing to do with her job but she finds the 9 to 5 schedule "crazy." She explained that if one is working remotely, they are done by 5 and they can be home but for her, it takes a long time to reach home. Belly shared, "And I know it could be worse. I know I could be working longer, but like, I literally get off and it's pitch black. How do you have friends? How do you have time to meet a guy? How do you have time for dating? I don't have time for anything, and I'm so stressed out."
The video garnered 3.8 million views and is captioned, "I'm also getting sick leave. I'm emotional being alone. Ok, I feel 12 and I'm scared of not having time to live." The comments on the video are currently turned off. But according to Distractify, one person commented, "No, this is so real, and any time I bring it up, everyone just kinda shrugs and says, 'Welcome to the real world.' Surely, there is more to life?"
Another one wrote, "The 40-hour work week is beyond outdated, and your feelings are valid." A third person shared, "I had a crisis when I got my first 9-5 job. Literally, I couldn't believe this was life." Pointing out how it doesn't get better, one more user wrote, "You just learn to force things in after work despite being exhausted because u feel like you are being cheated of time. Isn't this so sad?" What Belly shared in the video is something that many Gen Z as well as older generations who switched to worl from home must have felt once they started working from office.
