Almost every kid might have wanted to try out their parents' clothes, make-up items and accessories once while growing up. Therefore, when the time comes and they finally fit into their moms' or dads' outfits, it undoubtedly becomes a moment of sheer delight for them. One Gen Z content creator decided to bring out her mom's old dresses and try them on and record her actions. Danielle Wiens—who goes by @daniellewiens on TikTok—an Orange County-based influencer, known for sharing fashion-related videos on TikTok, shared a clip on June 21, 2023.
Wiens served the community with a generous dose of nostalgia in her video, where she tried out her mom's old outfits. She had worn it on different occasions during her youth. Wiens fished out a bright pink prom dress of her mom, then brought out her engagement dress and more to display. "Okay, I'm gonna try on my mom's prom dresses from high school," Wiens said. "Maybe not all prom. Some of them might just be from high school."
The content creator tried on each of those dresses. It just proved that some fashion statements and trends are timeless indeed. Wiens inserted old pictures of her mom wearing the dresses in the video as well. "Okay, this is so cute," she said while trying on a strapless pink, mid-length gown with bow-detailing that cinches around the waist, which apparently was purchased from Nordstrom in the late 80s. She even slipped into her mom's senior prom gown, which seemed to gain a lot of love online.
The black-and-white strapless gown is supposedly from 1984. Another mauve-shaded dress is something that Wiens struggles to fit into as the zipper at the back of the dress refuses to secure the outfit on her. The viewers of her video had nothing but positive things to say about this try-on haul. "Damn, these aged well!" @oneproductaday wrote. "Oh my god, the senior prom dress is beyond," @cammyporter replied.
"You're justifying my hoarder tendencies for my baby girls," @e_r_2016 commented, to which Wiens responded, "I used to make fun of her for it!! So glad she kept them now." By saving these gowns for her daughter, Wiens's mother has opted for a sustainable approach to fashion, even if it wasn't her intention initially.
According to the Fashion History Timeline, the 80s fashion trends were mostly dominated by stylist sport wear and spandex with the rise of the fitness craze amongst people. Women started wearing aesthetic gym outfits in their day-to-day lives. 80s fashion evolution can be seen through movies as well. Attires inspired by actresses like Jennifer Beal in the 1983 movie "Flashdance," which comprised off-shoulder sweatshirts and leggings, were something that most women preferred to wear back in the day.
According to InStyle, the poofy-sleeved and ruffled dresses from the 80s are witnessing a revival in the 21st century since luxury fashion houses like Saint Laurent, Miu Miu, and Alexandre Vauthier have produced retro-inspired outfits to prove that throwback trends are here to stay. And the gowns and flowy dresses never truly disappeared, which is why Wiens' mother's outfit collection from the 80s still manages to look fantastic.
