Other frequent flyers added things they'd want fellow travelers to know based on their own flights.
People put a lot of effort into choosing the right airline and seat to ensure a comfortable journey. However, even with the best planning, you often end up dealing with inconsiderate fellow passengers who make the experience frustrating for everyone. Frequent flyers know this all too well, as they regularly encounter bizarre and rude behaviors on their trips. To address this, Reddit user u/dgb6662 shared the “unwritten rules” of flying, prompting others to eagerly add their own based on personal travel nightmares.
The user started the post by explaining, "Experienced and considerate flyers know them instinctively. Inexperienced or rude flyers may not be aware of or care about them." The first "unwritten" rule was intended for many thoughtless window and aisle-seat passengers who leave no room in the armrest for the middle-seat passenger. They pointed out that the passenger in the middle seat gets both armrests. Secondly, they highlighted that the window-seat passenger gets to "control the shade." So, anyone who wants to get a say in keeping the window shades open or closed must be cautious in selecting their seats when booking a flight next time.
The passenger also emphasized the significance of following proper hygiene during a flight. "Leave your shoes on, especially if you have bare feet, and keep your stinky feet on the floor regardless of whether your shoes are on or off," they mentioned, before adding "Take a shower at least a week before you fly." Finally, the individual pointed out that a passenger must typically sit in their assigned seat. Although this should be obvious, the reality is that one has to reiterate the same rule several times until people get the hang of it.
This post resonated among many passengers on the internet, who added more "unwritten" rules to the list. "No speakerphone or FaceTime calls at any time while on board the airplane. If the person sitting next to you is not providing at least 20% of the conversation, they really don't want to have one. Broad shoulders do not mean elbows do not touch your sides when seated. If you know you pee a lot, pick an aisle seat," u/Zeke333333 suggested. "Know the rules and etiquette of getting through security. Look them up ahead of time. Observe what seasoned travelers are doing in the line and be self-aware," u/Far-Acanthisitta-448 chimed in.
"Take off your backpack before you get on the plane to avoid hitting others in the face. Store your luggage above or very near your own seat, not wherever you want to. If you have 2 carry-on items, the big one goes in the overhead, the small one goes under the seat in front of you," advised u/letmereadstuff. "When deplaning, do not run up the aisle to get off faster. Wait until it's your turn to get off," pointed out u/ReputationOfGold. "When you stand up, you don't pull on the seat in front of you. This happens way too often. It's annoying," added u/tkesmitty720.
