Trigger Warning: This article contains themes of suicide that some readers may find distressing.

"Whatever you’re going through, man, you can get through it." Officer Antonio Richardson said these words to a man who was standing at the top edge of the Dames Point Bridge, ready to jump and take his life. He tried prodding the man with gentle words, asking him to hold his hand so they could do a prayer together. According to an April 29 video, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office report recorded the April 12 incident with an Axon Body Cam. Thanks to his former position as a pastor, the officer from Florida was successfully able to save the man.

A call for 'traffic' brought surprising news

The team on the spot included patrol officers from District 2 and District 6. But Officer Richardson simply happened to be in the right place in the right moment. Initially, when he received the call, he thought it was for controlling the traffic. But as it turned out, the officers had called him to help this suicidal man, knowing his position as a pastor. As they had expected, Richardson engaged him in a conversation and eventually talked him out of his troubled thinking.“ [I] didn’t know what I was going to say. Nothing was scripted,” he shared in an interview with Fox & Friends. “I did not want to see him jump,” he added.

Encouraging his 'only' love

While initially, the man kept declining his suggestion, Richardson kept talking. At one point, the man had told Richardson about the love he had for his family. Richardson brilliantly used this piece of information to coerce him out of the extreme step. “You’re hurting, but if you jump, you’re going to hurt other people,” Richardson yelled. “Then they are going to be hurting just like you’re hurting now. The cycle of hurt has got to stop.” Another officer approached the duo and encouraged the man to give life another shot. “I know you got a lot going on. You do. But whatever, if you make that jump, its going to be a hundred times worse for everyone you care about. I know you don’t want to do that to them. It’ll ruin them.”.

A warm hug to cushion the fall

Once again, Richardson extended his hand towards the man. This time, he took it and stepped down from the open edge, falling into the officer’s arms, who wrapped him in a tight hug. “I love you. We all love you,” he told him, “We wear this badge for many reasons. This is the main reason. To reach those whom the devil thinks he got. He didn’t get you. We got you.” In that moment, the sheriff’s office said, the officers weren’t the police. “They were just people showing how much they care for another person.”

What to do when you're hurting

However, being an ardent devotee, Officer Richardson believes that it’s the connection that developed between them that saved his life. “We connected. And as a result of that connection, he didn’t jump, and that’s what it is all about.” According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, suicide is the leading cause of death in America. In 2023 alone, 49,316 deaths were reported with the cause of suicide. In 2022, an estimated 1.5 million people attempted suicide. Researchers say people who have experienced violence, including child abuse, bullying, severe depression, or sexual violence, have a higher suicide risk. Connection with family and community support, and easy access to healthcare can dramatically shift suicidal thoughts.
