Homeless man was denied a job at McDonald's because of his beard — a police officer helped him use his own trimmer to fix it

'I like to think of us more as peace officers first, law enforcement officers second. I wish I could have done more,' the officer said

A homeless man named Phillip walked into a McDonald's in Tallahassee, Florida, for a job. However, the staff immediately rejected him because of his long, unkempt beard. Disappointed, he came outside, thinking he had lost the opportunity, oblivious that Officer Tony Carlson, a kind cop, was waiting just outside the restaurant to change his life forever. Kelly Duvall shared the incredible story on Facebook.

Duvall's daughter, Hannah, was at the gas station when she spotted Officer Carlson shaving a homeless man's beard. Confused, she followed him into a store where he went in to clean after his grooming session. Looking at Officer Carlson, Hannah realized he was too tired, and so she offered to buy him a drink. Upon further conversation, the cop revealed that the restaurant had rejected the homeless man because of his appearance. "He was told they wouldn't hire him unless he shaved his beard," Hannah told her mom.

So, when Phillip informed Officer Carlson, he immediately stepped in with clippers and started shaving his beard. Although the homeless man had just approached the cop to help him fix his shaver, Officer Carlson insisted on helping him more. Once done, the homeless man with his new look went to McDonald's again and, as expected, got the job. "I like to think of us more as peace officers first, law enforcement officers second. I wish I could have done more," the officer said, reflecting on his kind gesture. However, the story didn't end there.

A few days later, Officer Carlson met Phillip again, according to FOX 13. This time, when he stopped to check in, Phillip said that the restaurant needed his identification paperwork for his employment. Following the brief exchange, the cop informed Senator Marco Rubio, who then stepped in to help the homeless man obtain the documents he needed to start work. "I told Phil when I got to work on Thursday that I would print out the paperwork they emailed to me and bring it by for Phil to fill out. They also said Phil could come by their office, and they would help him with the process. Phil was super excited and assured me he would be ready for Thursday," Officer Carlson explained.

A 2024 Gallup poll of U.S. adults found that nearly half (49%) of Americans lack confidence in their police force and their ability to protect them. Although overall Americans' trust in the police force had increased by 8% over the past year, the poll revealed that only 25% of people reported a "great deal" of confidence, while only 26% said they had "quite a lot" of confidence. It means, in a world where only a handful of people trust authority for adequate protection, officers like Mr. Carlson are an exception.

Meanwhile, reacting to the wholesome story of the kind police officer, Jaime Lee commented, "This is awesome! I love seeing positive stories about police officers instead of all the negative stories that we are constantly bombarded with in the news. Similarly, Toni King wrote, "God bless this man and the officer; God works in ways no one can imagine." Similarly, Janice Thomas Alexander shared, "It is so wonderful to see someone willing to help."
