The fire department had to cut the spokes and ruin the bike to free the boy, but they had a heartwarming surprise up their sleeve to lift his spirits.
Sometimes, a person might need the cheer and joy of the holiday season more than ever. A boy who got his foot stuck in the spokes of his bike during an accident found himself in such a situation. The fire department rushed in to free his foot from under the bike. However, they had a wholesome surprise waiting for him at the hospital to make his and his family's holiday infinitely brighter. The incident was shared on the Fernandina Beach Fire Department's Facebook page.
"Earlier tonight, A-Shift firefighters responded to a bicycle accident involving a young boy whose foot was pinned between the spokes and frame of his bicycle," the fire department wrote in a post from December 19. "Unfortunately, they had to cut the bicycle spokes to free the patient’s foot for treatment," the team added.
But the firefighters decided to do something to keep his spirits up after the accident. "Once their patient was safely freed, these amazing firefighters took it upon themselves to purchase a new bike and helmet and surprise him at the hospital with it," the post revealed. "This reminds us of what the holidays are truly about."
The post concluded, "Merry Christmas and happy holidays from our fire family to yours. Stay safe, Fernandina." It also included a picture of two firefighters who had gone to the hospital to present a gift to the boy. As he slept in his bed, a brand new blue bike and matching helmet were placed at the foot of it. His mother, present in the photo, appeared very happy with the heartwarming gesture. She told Good News Network that the injury hadn't caused any major damage, but the boy was still in shock from the incident. The post received over 700 reactions, and many people, including the boy's mom, Joanne Rebholz, took to the comments section to express their appreciation for the beautiful surprise.
Debbie Hubbard wrote, "This was amazing that these firefighters took that upon themselves, congrats to you guys. One that happens to be my Grandson." Gerald Pauley commented, "This brings JOY to my heart! Thank you for going above and beyond to serve the community! Merry Christmas!" The boy's mom responded to the post, "Thank you again, you really showed up and showed out! What an amazing community! So glad it wasn’t any worse! Thank you from KJ, he is still in shock; it is so heartwarming."
Shirley Howell remarked, "Wonderful Christmas gift for the young man. Merry Christmas to all our Fire Fighters and First Responders. Stay safe." Jessica Miller expressed, "Magical moments create memories to last a lifetime! Thank you for all you do, Fernandina Beach Fire Department." Ty Silcox shared, "I love to see the culture living on and strong. Great work, Fernandina Beach Fire Department, you all rock!" Crystal Dombrosky revealed, "Fernandina Beach firefighters are the absolute kindest and sweetest! So thankful for them!" Willie Scott pointed out, "THAT'S WHAT FIREFIGHTERS DO. TAKE CARE OF THEIR COMMUNITY AND OTHERS. GREAT JOB."
