Jade Smith, a Toronto-based content creator, lost her favorite piece of jewelry while traveling in Greece. It was a beautiful ring that reminded her of her late father. Unfortunately, in 2018, it was stolen, and Smith thought she had lost it forever. However, her fiancé, Jed Tavernier (@jedtavernier), a Canadian TV personality, left her speechless when he surprised her with the same ring on her dad's death anniversary. Tavernier posted her emotional reaction on February 25. So far, the video has been viewed 831K times on his Instagram page.
It's been a decade since Smith lost her father, and the only thing she had to remember him by was a ring. However, in 2018, it was stolen, and Smith assumed she had lost her favorite piece of jewelry forever. But little did she know, Tavernier — her fiancé — had already set off on a mission to reunite her with the same ring on her dad's 10th death anniversary. Well, he found a picture of the ring from her Facebook profile and, with the help of his friend, Alex, recreated it. Tavernier then gifted it to Smith, who perhaps had never expected a surprise like that, because for her, the ring was "gone forever."
With little expectation, Smith unwrapped the present. She first read the little note her fiancé had written for her, then opened the gift. When Smith saw the ring, she froze for a second, unsure if it was even real. She couldn't believe her eyes, but then realization hit, and she pulled Tavernier into a hug. She was overwhelmed by the surprise and felt grateful for having such a beautiful partner by her side. "I'm crying all over again. You are the greatest gift I’ve ever received, the most thoughtful human I’ve ever met. I love you endlessly," Smith confessed.
A keepsake, or a memento, often helps grieving people hold on to precious memories during difficult times. In a study (published in ScienceDirect), a New York hospital provided a memory box to 20 families of patients on end-of-life care. Each box included a framed telemetry rhythm strip, a candle, a comfort stone, a bookmark with a fingerprint, an acrylic stone with a message, bereavement support information, and a condolence card. Notably, researchers allowed families to add their own personal items to the box. In the end, the study found that 100% of families with a memory box said it made the end-of-life experience more meaningful. Moreover, "this allowed them to keep a small part of their loved ones' memory alive," the study noted, further explaining why Smith was so attached to the ring and why she was so heartbroken when she lost it.

Meanwhile, netizens were in awe, witnessing Jedson's beautiful gesture for his grieving fiancée; for instance, @missvictoriaclark commented, "This is so incredible and so thoughtful. What a beautiful way to help her feel closer to him." @michaelrrcurtis shared, "Bro, my girlfriend lost her mom 2 years ago, and all she had left was a watch and a ring. She had the ring stolen in Mexico by the airline workers. It was a discontinued ring, but I was finally able to find the exact one for her on eBay over a year later and surprised her on Christmas with it." Similarly, @agirlnamedharley wrote, "This is the thoughtfulness that every human deserves. What a gift it is to be seen, loved, and understood the way you do for her. So happy for you, Jade!"
