Mclaughlin hilariously states that his future brother-in-law still 'owes' his sister a gift.

Eric Mclaughlin's sister received her Secret Santa gift in the form of a ring from her fiancé, but her brother's review of the "surprise" has got the internet rolling in laughter. Sharing his hilarious roast of the boyfriend's proposal on December 29, Mclaughlin is unapologetic about how things turned out, and it's safe to say that the internet approves.

Eric Mclaughlin's (@lookitseric_) family had arranged a Secret Santa tradition this year; however, his sister's boyfriend had pre-planned a surprise proposal for her by "rigging" the game to become her Secret Santa. Interestingly, the surprise has been "bothering" Mclaughlin for a couple of reasons. First, he took issue with the game being unfair, since the names are randomly drawn from a hat, and the fiancé couldn't have coincidentally landed his sister's name. So, it's evident he cheated. Secondly, he was not a fan of the way he'd proposed to his sister. "He put the ring in the box, wrapped it up, gave it to her, she opens it, starts crying, he's on one knee, the whole family's cheering. Seems sweet, but she was going to get that ring regardless," he said. Mclaughlin hilariously states that his future brother-in-law still "owes" his sister a gift. Lastly, Mclaughlin "complained" about the man not sticking to their "50 dollar limit" for the Secret Santa arrangement, because with the bar sky-high now, it would be difficult to one-up this gift — ever.
A 2009 study authored by Brian Duncan conducted an experiment to find how individuals decide their gifts during the Secret Santa exchange. The findings were "inconsistent with both altruism and warm glow," meaning that the players involved had more at stake than the value of generosity that is attached to the tradition. They had 'external reasons' associated with gift-giving, some of which could be attributed to seeking 'validation,' which remained inconsistent with the primary idea of Secret Santa — an anonymous game. While Mclaughlin's future brother-in-law may have wanted to gift something meaningful to his girlfriend, his ultimate motive was to pull off a proposal through the tradition, which he successfully managed to execute, rigged or not!

Soon after the post went viral, many users shared their reactions to the video that raked in more than 1 million likes on Instagram. @samenewthing wrote, "Can you imagine if he also stayed within the $50 limit." @magic.skeletons shared, "Obviously, you now have to make it tradition to fake propose to someone every year from here on out." @seanbullinghamphotography asked, "If he pulled your name out would you have said yes?" to which Mclaughlin replied, "ya he's cute and stuff."
