Florida diners skipped a $298 tab and bragged online. They forgot one crucial clue
At first, the woman got up with the car keys, and then, one by one, all seven of them slipped out of the restaurant
Dine-and-dash incidents have left many restaurant owners facing financial losses and additional pressure on their businesses. Recently, it happened at @TheDiner (@atthediner) on Universal Boulevard in Orlando. A family of seven walked into the restaurant for a brunch meal and waddled out without paying the bill. Thanks to surveillance cameras and one clue they unintentionally left, their clever heist was captured on footage and later handed to the police. The footage has been viewed more than 10.8 million times. In the end, the punters were forced to cough up the money, according to a report by WKMG News 6 ClickOrlando on July 19, 2026.
Well-planned heist
The surveillance footage, timestamped 14:21, shows two adults and five children eating at the restaurant table. At about 14:22, the woman stands up, and the man hands her a bunch of keys, probably the car keys. She walks away from the table. In another minute, the man looks on either side and stands up. Four of the five children follow him and walk out of the restaurant. One of the kids keeps sitting at the table, making it look like she is going to pay the bill.
The biggest clue
A few seconds later, she too leaves the restaurant. It seemed like the whole scene was planned beforehand by the family, given that they executed it so well. When restaurant owners Anthony and his mom Diane first discovered the dine-and-dash, they suddenly realized that the culprit had left their phone number with the hostess while waiting for a table. Using that information, they immediately began calling and texting the diners.
Long list of embezzled snacks
The man replied gloating, “I don’t care; you’ll just make me more famous.” After much hesitation over the red tape, the restaurant owners filed a report with the Orange County Sheriff's Office. The report cited the customers as “persons of interest” together with the accounts of the meals and services they pilfered. The list of stolen meals included three two-egg combos, one loaded grits, one Dubai chocolate-stuffed waffle, one Mama’s Chix & Waffles, two Belgian waffles, one kids' pancake, one orange juice, one kids' drink, one Mimosa Cranberry, one Sierra Mist, two lemonades, two butter beer lattes, and six bacons, together amounting to a $298.47 bill.
Half a win
The owners confirmed that they would withdraw any pressing charges if the family confessed to their crime and issued a public apology. All they wanted was “accountability,” because they had involved kids in the crime. Shortly after their conversation with News 6, the customer called them and agreed to pay the check over the phone. As for the apology, the man insisted that the discussion be carried out on Zoom. The reporters and restaurant owners waited till 20 minutes before they realized that he had bailed out of the call.
When guests become goons
A QikServe survey, published by HospitalityNet, reported that 12% of the diners bail out of paying the bills at restaurants. More than 50% of those who bailed out admitted to leaving because they had to wait too long for the bill or didn’t find staff to make the payment. Unfortunately, neither was the case with the latest dine-and-dashers. Although a server was serving drinks at an adjoining table when they were leaving, their intention was clear from the start: leave without paying. Such incidents not only amplify the insecurity of restaurant owners, but also cost them high revenue leakage unless the looters are tracked and forced to pay.
They're building 'Future Criminals'
Viewers responded to the footage with revolting reactions. Most of them were appalled by the fact that the two adults chose to involve kids in their crime. @carose62 commented, “They are teaching the Future Criminals how they do it. Pathetic.” @beautifulbadfit said, “This is beyond ghetto. Don’t go out if you ain’t got the money or want to pay for it.” @wendysinc speculated, “Restaurants are going to start taking payments prior to dining.”
