It all started when his family received a package at the house with no return address

Every weekday for the past over the past two decades, Hinato's (@opsylojay1) dad, Mr. Chen, who was a bus driver, drove the same route from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Being an old school man, Mr. Chen's family knew almost nothing about his work, as he seemingly maintained strict boundaries between his professional and personal life. However, that changed recently, after he unfortunately passed away, and his family received a package at the house with no return address. Inside it was a shoebox full of letters with a note, which prompted Mr. Chen's son to take it to X to share the entire story on May 19, 2026, garnering a staggering 3.6 million views.
My dad was a bus driver for 23 years. Same route, 5AM-1PM, every weekday. He never talked about work at home.

When he died, we got a package at the house. No return address. Inside was a shoebox full of letters and one note:
“Open these when you’re ready to understand your dad”
There was a note with the letter that read, "Open these when you’re ready to understand your dad." Although his family did not know about it, Mr. Chen was actually helping out those in need — specifically, a blind boy named Jamal. As it turns out, for the past 23 years, Hinato's dad had been picking up Jamal and even learned his name within the first week. Even though Jamal never spoke back to him, Mr. Chen would still go on to describe everything to him on the way, from the weather to the cars on the road to the song playing on the radio. All this was just so little Jamal wouldn't feel left out.
Turns out, for 23 years, every morning he’d pick up a blind kid at the same stop. Kid’s name was Jamal. Dad learned his name week 1, even though Jamal never said a word back.

Dad would describe the weather, the traffic, what song was playing on the radio. Just narrating the…
While the boy never uttered a word, he did like to meet Mr. Chen every day and hear all those things from him. Turns out, the letters Mr. Chen's family got were from Jamal, "23 years' worth." In those letters, he described his relationship with Mr. Chen as well as the impact he unknowingly created in his life. In the last letter, Jamal revealed, "Mr. Chen, you were the first person who made me feel like I wasn’t alone in the world. I’m a teacher now. I do the same thing for my students who won’t make eye contact. I tell them about the weather. Thank you for teaching me how."

Although it's a bit sad that Hinato only learned about his dad's impact on society after his demise, it was an emotional moment as he got to meet Jamal for the first time at his dad's funeral after reading all those letters. At the same time, it served as a reminder that true legacy isn't built on accolades or public recognition, but in these unseen moments toward another human being.
Mr. Chen didn't go way and beyond with his gestures for Jamal, but was consistent with them. This is something that most people miss, which is quite concerning. Even more so, with studies showcasing that small interactions help the overall mental well-being of a human being more than grand gestures. According to a study held by the Journal of Contemporary Clinical Practice, positive social interactions could help reduce stress levels by 32.9%. At the same time, these interactions can also improve a person's mental health by nearly 25.7%, which is quite unbelievable.
That note alone would emotionally destroy me.

There’s something heartbreaking about realizing the quietest people often leave behind the deepest impact.
You spend your whole childhood thinking you know your parents, then one moment makes you realize how much of their life they…
What a profound gift he left you. All those silent years driving the same roads, and now these letters waiting to explain the man behind the routine. The note is so him — patient, respectful of your feelings. Whenever you open them, you’ll be meeting another side of your dad.

Meanwhile, reacting to the wholesome story, @bylinkinmichael shared, "I’m sure your Dad did a lot for many others as well. Jamal was the one who showed you your Dad’s kindness. You should know there are many other stories like this you haven’t heard of (yet), and your Dad touched many lives in a positive manner. You had a great Dad." Similarly, @olamipo_1 commented, "Your dad was truly a great man. To quietly show up for someone like that every single day without ever bragging about it at home is the definition of pure integrity. Rest in peace, a hero."
