'This is the kind of dysfunctional sh*t keeps her living,' the granddaughter said.
As people grow old, particularly those in their twilight years, we often notice a significant shift in their behavior. While some gradually lose maturity and return to an innocent childish state, many become more finicky, constantly seeking attention and emotional assurance from others. While dealing with an older person and spending valuable time with them is mostly rewarding, at times, it can also be greatly challenging. This profound truth was highlighted when Zena Dabouffe's (@zenadabouffe on TikTok) 90-year-old grandmother refused to take her medicines, but it was Dabouffe's husband, Daniel's, heartwarming gesture that had her and everyone else on social media in awe.
In the heartfelt clip, Dabouffe's grandmother, who is now 97 years old, had refused to take her medication as she had begun believing that her end was near. However, it was at this moment that her entire family, especially Dabouffe's beloved husband, stepped up and launched an impromptu musical performance at 2 am to convince their grandmother to take her medications. While she lay peacefully on her bed, Daniel picked up the guitar, despite not knowing how to play, and went on to perform a self-improvised song titled 'Grandma Jean.'
"Grandma Jean, grandma Jean, won't have an aspirin. Grandma Jean, Grandma Jean, she's not there, Grandma Jean. She's got one more life today. She's dying soon, the house needs sorting out," he began singing, and the entire room, including his wife and her grandmother, burst out laughing. As if the scene wasn't already quirky enough, Daniel then pointed to a cabinet behind him and sang, "For some reason, this cupboard behind me is off, out of bounds," repeatedly asking, "What are you hiding in there?" At this point, even their family dog, who was on the bed alongside their grandmother, seemed to be enjoying Daniel's unplanned concert.
Companionship is crucial for senior citizens around the world. While Dabouffe's grandmother is beyond lucky to have good people surrounding her who can take care of her physical, mental, and emotional well-being, countless older people silently endure the pain of solitude. Notably, as per a study by the National Library of Medicine, "lack of companionship was associated with a higher likelihood of having a heart condition in an older adult sample," with lonely seniors most likely to develop grave disorders. The report also stated that people with higher average companionship exhibited lower overall "negative affect" and more overall "positive affect." This, perhaps, explains why older people with good company enjoy a happier and longer life.
Meanwhile, reacting to the video, @holymolly06 commented, "That man needs to be a peace negotiator because he made that situation a beautiful memory and funny as hell." @jessicaharvey412 revealed, "My grandma is 82 and [practicing] Swedish Death Cleaning. I told her to sit the f*** down because I’m getting at least another decade out of her. She’s fit enough to gut the entire garage herself, and she’s good". @lee.parkinson3 shared, "I love this. Your grandma wasn't depressed for long. It's amazing how much laughter and time with her grandchildren can make her feel better. Good on you for this." @krissiehall4 said, "I feel like maybe she just wanted this. You know she’s just loving the extra company."
On the other hand, @budgetwithtaryn, who resonated with the clip, wrote, "Omg my grandad did this and we all started dividing his belongings up between us whilst he was sitting there. He started taking his meds again straight away." @sashathered commented, "I’ve had to come back to this video after 30 mins to tell you I cannot get this song out of my head!" @juicylucy698 asked, "After watching this a number of times now, I’m wondering, does Grandma Jean own a guitar, or did he bring it especially for the occasion?" @sandra_white4confessed, "Well, I’m going to be singing, 'Grandma Jean Grandma Jean,' all day now, it’s like an episode from 'The Office.' I love this so much!"
@zenadabouffe Grandmas annual depression where she decided she is dying so there’s no need to take her medication. Don’t ask why my husband decided to serenade her. This is the sort of disfuncional shit that keeps her living, she’s now 97 so it must have worked 😅 #family #disfunctionalfamily #funny #fyp #serenade #90 #eldery #granny ♬ original sound - Zena Dabouffe
