Family didn't recognize elderly man crying at their grandmother's funeral — then he called her 'the best wife' he ever had

Funerals bring families together, and sometimes these gatherings bring up stories about a loved one that other family members were not even aware of. Monique Kendrick (@kendrixxmfn) took to Threads to share something hilarious that happened at her grandmother's funeral in 2017. During the time of viewing, an older gentleman came to pay his respects, but no one recognized him. When the pastor was about to close the casket, the gentleman said something that shocked everyone at the gathering. Her post from May 8, 2026, has received 2,900 likes and 203 comments.

More than neighbors

Kendrick and her cousin, who were near the casket right before the pastor closed it, overheard the stranger calling their grandmother "the best wife" he had. Kendrick knew for a fact that her grandmother did not remarry after her second husband passed away in 1992, so who was this man who claimed to be her husband? During the repass, Kendrick's cousin thanked him for coming to the funeral, but Kendrick began questioning how he had met their grandmother. It turned out that he was their grandmother's neighbor who lived in apartment 302. Their grandma was in 301. 

A 5-year-long secret

The man went on to explain that he knew them through the stories their grandmother shared while she made him breakfast and dinner. The two women were shocked because their grandmother had never cooked for them. They peppered him with more questions about how long they had been dating and why they did not know anything about him, and he had all the answers for them.

The mysterious man and their grandmother had been together for five years, and he was never introduced to the family because their grandmother wanted to keep it private. When they asked him what she cooked for him, he responded, "All my favorites." All this time, no one in the family knew that their grandmother had a secret boyfriend.

Romance does not fade with age

Many may assume that senior citizens might not have a love life after they have reached a certain age. However, a 2026 report from the Retirement Living Journal of Retirement Research found that nearly one in 10 dating app users was 65 years old or more. About 31% of adults between the ages of 50 and 64 tried online dating. The research also revealed that 40% of adults between the ages of 65 and 80 are still sexually active. While Kendrick's grandmother did not use a dating app, her story is a reminder that romance does not fade with age.

'My business ain't your business'

People in the comments found the story amusing, and a few good-naturedly pointed out that the way Kendrick and her cousin were interrogating the older gentleman was exactly the reason why their late grandmother kept it a secret. @ericagetsitdone commented, "Nana said, sometimes my business ain't your business." @carnivaljedi added, "This is the kind of lore I need to drop after I pass."
