When a family loses their dog in the aftermath of a traumatic event, they almost always fear the worst. They brace themselves for the harsh reality of never seeing their companion again. This was the exact nightmare Sharron and Dearah Jordan went through when their 3-year-old Australian shepherd Daisy, went missing following their collision on Highway 33 near Kelowna, B.C., while returning from a lake trip on May 30. However, what happened four days later not only stunned the couple but also made Daisy the talk of the town, according to CTV News' article posted on June 3, 2026.

The Jordans were worried

As soon as their vehicle stopped rolling, the first thing that Dearah and her husband noticed, despite suffering scrapes and bruises, was that their dog was missing. In an interview with CBC's Radio West, Dearah said she immediately undid her seatbelt and began calling out Daisy, but got no response. Although she tried to continue her search, soon the emergency crew showed up and insisted that she get herself treated and assessed at the hospital first. While she did oblige to this request, the thought of Daisy didn't leave her mind.

After getting cleared from the hospital, they started their search again, but to no avail. Nearby, Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) and the RCMP were responding to an unrelated call. One of the rescuers, Forrest Kellerman, learned about the crash from an RCMP officer. That evening, he came across a Facebook post (now deleted) posted by the Jordans about Daisy that caught his attention.

The post sparked something in him

Although COSAR doesn't help in the search for missing animals, this post struck a chord with Kellerman as he and her wife also owned a couple of Australian shepherds. So, he decided to help find Daisy, but even with their help, Daisy was still not found. The following day, the Jordans provided the team with more information about their dog to help them find her.

Shortly after they took Kellerman and his team to the crash site, hoping that'd help. There, the local residents joined them, offering whatever help they could. From letting them use their drones to giving them expert advice on finding pets, you name it. In fact, a stranger even spent their birthday looking for Daisy. But after days without a sighting, hope was fading. On the fourth day, Tracey Kellerman, Forrest's wife, suggested they revisit the crash site once more.

Alas, Daisy was back home

Tracey, for some reason, wanted to have another look there, especially inside the truck that had hit Jordan's car. Sure enough, her gut was right, as when she reached closer, she saw an eye popping out of the truck. It was none other than Daisy sitting in the passenger's seat. "I'll never forget seeing her," Tracey recalls. She then alerted her husband to stay with the dog, while she informed the Jordans that their companion was well and alive.

The number of lost dogs in the US

According to Paw Maw, about 65.1 million households across the country own at least one dog. Out of these, a staggering 10 million dogs are reported lost or stolen every year. Although most of them do return safely to their homes, almost 7% of dogs never find their way back, of which 1% are found deceased. Thankfully, that wasn't the case with Daisy, who is now happily back with her family.

Nonetheless, the people couldn't help but express their emotions in the comments on a Facebook post by COSAR. Janet Smith wrote, "Wow, Forrest and Tracey! You are both superheroes. As a dog owner, your kindness and help saved a family from losing their precious pet." Shawneen Mahoney added, "Smart dog who knows not to leave the scene of an accident!"
