It was supposed to be a quiet anniversary dinner but the Fairfax-based restaurant changed the course of Sunni's night

What was meant to be a quiet anniversary dinner for Sunni (@itsalwayssunniii) and her partner at Crazy Crab in Fairfax, Virginia, turned into a painful experience after the couple received their bill. On May 18, 2026, when Sunni looked at the receipt, she found a racial slur printed on it. She took a photo of the bill and shared it on Threads, where the post soon drew widespread attention, gaining more than 576,000 views and prompting the restaurant manager to issue an apology.
Well, the story began with Sunni and her partner sitting for dinner at the restaurant. This wasn't the first time Sunni had visited this place, so she expected it to be a great night. However, she noticed the waiter seemed a bit distracted, but, given that it was a special night for them, the couple ignored it and placed the order. In fact, they even enjoyed the dinner until the bill came. On the surface, it seemed like any other bill, only for Sunni to notice a racial slur written on it.

She couldn't believe her eyes at first. Later, she told Fox 5 that she was "shocked and in disbelief." "I really could not process what was happening in the heat of the moment. It was just shocking and upsetting. I'm very angry with the situation overall," she said. But the couple avoided creating a scene at the place. Instead, her fiancé decided to post this incident on Google. Although it caught the attention of the restaurant, they blamed the POS machine for the wrongdoing and apologized. "After investigating internally, we learned this was not intended as a discriminatory remark towards you, but rather a serious mistake caused by inappropriate staff language and a cultural/language misunderstanding entered into the POS system..."
Sunni didn't feel like this apology or response was enough for their actions. "I don’t feel like this is sufficient or appropriate, and this will be escalated," she wrote in her post. This led to Crazy Crab's manager, Rez Choudhury, stepping up and apologizing to the community. "We are deeply, deeply sorry. We are deeply apologetic about this whole incident. We have no words to express how remorseful we are," he said.

Amid this, perhaps the most surprising fact was that the couple who received the note was Vietnamese and Asian. In fact, the waiter, who has since been fired, was also Asian. Nonetheless, Sunni was quite annoyed seeing the restaurant take this long to fire the waiter and believes that this was only done following the massive backlash they faced online.
While Sunni's courage helped her and her fiancé get justice, racial discrimination remains a huge issue despite us entering the second half of 2026. According to a survey held across 36 countries by the Pew Research Center, around 34% of adults believe that racial or ethnic discrimination is a big problem even today. Another 34% consider this a moderate issue. In the U.S., based on their ideologies, nearly 51% of liberals believe this is a big issue. In contrast, only 33% of moderates and 15% of conservatives believe so.
That said, the majority of the people in the comments section of the post sided with Sunni. @miamor_710 wrote, "This is when you get a lawyer involved. I pay for legal assistance through my employer, and you should check if you have that option if you don’t have a lawyer already. Black people don’t sue enough, and it’s about time we start. Mine is called Legal Shield." Meanwhile, @squirrelrave commented, "This administration has amped up the BLATANT racism. This is disgusting."
