"Today we're seen as a social media company but in our DNA, we are a company that builds technology to connect people. And the metaverse is the next frontier just like social networking was when we got started," announced Zuckerberg, reported CNBC. The name Facebook will just be limited to the social media platform, relegating it to the status of Instagram and WhatsApp, as another subsidiary of the company's products.
Many suspect Facebook's re-branding aims to wash away negative press caused by the release of 'Facebook Papers' from whistleblower Frances Haugen. The whistleblower revealed that hate speech was a huge issue on the platform is a bigger problem than Facebook likes to concede. It was also found that Facebook's core products contribute to the spread of harmful material, reported Bloomberg. It remains to be seen how Facebook Meta will be released but the internet is already anticipating a dystopian future stemming from the metaverse.
