Expensive gas is making people upset on social media because they end up paying more than expected.
Gas prices are skyrocketing all around the country. Due to the high prices, a lot of people have taken to the internet to vent their annoyance at gas costs and the inconvenience of refueling. Many are looking for ways to save money when refueling. One TikTok user claims to have some helpful tips. In a video with over 2,58,000 views as of Saturday, TikTok user @daddybrownn shares why he thinks "you're getting ripped off when you fill up your gas tank."
First, he suggests filling up your car in the morning rather than later in the day. "Gas expands when it's warm and becomes denser when it's cold, like everything else," he explains. "If you buy gas later in the day after the sun has warmed up the ground, the gas in the tank will be expanded, and you'll actually get less gas." Second, he advises pumping gas slowly. "The faster you pump, the more gas turns into vapor," he says. "All gas pumps have a vapor return line that puts the vapor back into the tank, so you're paying for gas you don't get. The faster you pump, the more goes back into the tank."
Third, he recommends not waiting until your gas tank is almost empty before refilling. "Gas evaporates when it comes into contact with air, so if you're driving with an empty tank, it's evaporating faster the lower it gets," he explains. "That's because more air is entering the tank. To get the best fuel efficiency, filling up when your tank is half full is recommended." Finally, while he admits this tip isn't "approved by science," he advises avoiding filling up right after a large truck. "The big tanker dumps a lot of gasoline into the underground tanks at the station, which stirs up dirt and debris. If you get gas right after, that dirt and debris can end up in your tank."
In the comments section, many users said they don't believe these tips and think they are mostly unrealistic. "The gas in underground tanks stays the same temp. No matter what the outside is. Pumps have filters. So dirt being stirred up, doesn't go into the tank," commented @dmbrown417. "In Canada, the prices of gas are more expensive in the morning than later in the day," said @8bb88b8.
"Yap session," @izkl commented possibly stating the baselessness of the facts. "Petrol tanks are underground to keep the petroleum at an even temperature. It's not going to change that much from the underground tank to your petrol tank. I agree with the tanker filling," said @gingerlillylove to which many viewers agreed. @shadowcancers being one of them added this view saying, "Gas tanks are regulated to stay at a certain temp getting it earlier or later in the day doesn't matter anymore". Some viewers however have different experiences. @fk8_mikey shared, "Been doing this for a while now I talked to one of the truck drivers who deliver the fuel and he told me this and my fuel always lasts longer than it did before."
