On a cloudy day in Nashville, Casey Johnson stood in front of his girlfriend, Shay, holding a camera and recording her reactions to the nice things he had to say about her. His girlfriend, unaware of the fact that her reactions, captured in an Instagram video posted @caseyis___, would soon turn into a lifetime moment, were actually part of a script written by Johnson.

Shay Sullivan stood unaware in front of the camera, laughing, gasping, and shimmying to all the flattering statements made by her boyfriend, like: “you’re the funniest girl,” “you have the most beautiful eyes; I could swim in them,” “I love that you have girlfriend brain whenever I am around, and you just let me make decisions,” and “you’re happy no matter what.” Happily agreeing to all these claims while enjoying a drink, Johnson suddenly shifts his tone to a more serious one.

“Here we go,” reads the text overlay of the video. “I am so in love with you, you are the best thing ever happened to me. You are the sweetest mother and kindest person in my life.” Tipsy, Sullivan took all these meaningful phrases to be a normal expression of love, completely ignorant of where it was all leading. It wasn't until Johnson explicitly shared his desire to become her fiancé and husband that Sullivan gasped, finally comprehending the events unfolding around her. He promptly handed her the camera and got on one knee! Shocked, Sullivan took the phone, and then the video cuts and zooms out to capture Johnson’s proposal and Sullivan saying yes while shedding tears.

The first wedding proposals date back to 2350 BC in Mesopotamia, at which time weddings were merely a transactional activity. However, according to Times Entertainment, Greek Mythology has the most evident form of the first proposal at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis — when Eris “threw an apple” at the crowd, wishing it would go to the fairest woman, and thus the famous “Apple of Discord” concept originated. Further research by Eugene Stock McCartney also restored this myth, that the Apple of Discord was the apple of love, highlighting how the Greeks used to give apples to their sweethearts, marking it as a declaration of their love.

Over the centuries, people have moved from throwing apples to going down on one knee. Times Entertainment also mentioned that bowing in front of your to-be wife was a symbol of showing respect among the nobility, which has now become a custom for proposals. Sullivan and Johnson’s proposal marks the beginning of their new chapter. “My heart forever,” wrote Johnson in the caption of the video.

Viewers were also taken aback by this proposal, “Well done, my man.. This was beautiful all the way around," shared his brother @bart_johnson. "Ladies, gf brain is a choice. I hope you get that choice when you find a good man. It's the best feeling to be pampered and cared for," said @locdinwithraven. "I love how we couldn’t hear the sweet whispers that were said. Respect people's intimacy in these moments. I love it CONGRATS," wrote @tytricey. "So sweet! But the photographer in me is DYING that he did this in the middle of all the tables and NOT in the middle of the grass," commented @eleyanafaithphotography.
