Woman pre-boarded in a wheelchair after hip surgery — the entitled mom next to her still demanded the window seat she'd paid for

Flying with a healing body is already stressful, but mid-flight seat negotiations can escalate that stress. One woman (u/mistresselilly) faced this issue while traveling to meet her doctor post-hip surgery. Despite pre-booking a wheelchair service and paying $50 for a window seat to avoid disruption, an "entitled" mom asked her to switch seats because she wanted to breast-feed her 10-week-old baby. The woman posted the entire exchange on Reddit on June 16, 2026, which has received over 2,100 upvotes.

An energetic arrival

The entire incident started shortly after the woman settled into her seat, as soon as a mother sat in the adjacent middle seat with her 10-week-old baby. She immediately began speaking in high-pitched baby voices, roleplaying on behalf of her infant to announce that this was his first flight after the woman just said "congratulations." She didn't pay much attention to this and put on her earphones, but the mother kept pestering the woman to switch seats with her.

The bold demand

She wanted the author to change her seat, for which she paid extra, just so that her privacy wouldn't be invaded when she breastfed her child. "I might need the window seat because it’s easier for me to breastfeed my baby, so I will ask you to switch," she told the woman. The woman felt that it was too entitled and more of a demand rather than a request. "I think asking to switch from the middle to the window is impolite in general. middle* seats are notoriously bad! On flights, in cars, on buses, etc., everyone hates them because you feel squished," the author noted. Obviously, given that she just had surgery, she refused, after which the mood shifted.

She became desperate

As soon as the woman refused, the mother started asking everyone for a seat switch and called the flight attendant, hoping that they'd provide some assistance. However, even though they shut her down, saying that the flight was full. Nonetheless, she got lucky as some passengers couldn't board the flight, so there was an empty aisle seat, which she eventually got. Meanwhile, the woman continued to wonder why someone would even ask to change seats with another person when they paid extra for it. "If privacy was so important to her during breastfeeding, she should have secured her seat and paid for it," she said.

Switch or not to switch?

Regardless, many people share the same thought as the woman. In fact, about 88.7% Americans believe that people should be allowed to keep their booked seats until there's a valid reason to change them. This comes as a result of 84% people who agreed to switch seats regretting their decision, with the primary factor being them being pressured or forced to do so by other people. 25.5% stated this as their reason for feeling bad after making a change, according to Photo Aid.

'Wow, the entitlement...'

People in the comments also shared this sentiment. u/punk_lover wrote, "I’ll never understand anyone asking to switch seats, the absolute only time I could imagine is if someone had some tummy issues (vomit or something) and wanted to trade for an aisle besides that you pick when you buy tickets, maybe pick better or suck it up." Meanwhile, u/KaroGmz was stunned. "Wow, the entitlement slapped me in the face. Was that her attempt at asking? 'I might need your seat.' Well, I might need your wallet. Is that how it works now?" They wrote.
