Little did the boss know that his unreasonable demands would have dire repurcussions that might even cost him his job.
It's one thing to have an exhausting work day, but to have a micromanaging boss on our backs all the time is a whole new level of frustration. Several employees can't help but stay in such a toxic work environment, not knowing how to tackle such micromanagers. But one employee, who goes by u/pathofuncertainty on Reddit, had a witty plan to silence their boss who had unreasonable demands. They decided to do exactly what their boss asked them to but it turned out to be a hilarious payback and the internet is absolutely amused.
Describing their boss, the worker wrote, "He loved to micromanage and always wanted to know if I talked to anyone higher in the management than he was." But his micromanaging wasn't the only problem, the boss wanted to know every detail of the conversation the employee had with the higher-level executives. Since the employee had specialized qualifications that made them more visible to upper management, they often had to directly take calls from them during ungodly hours. "The 'baby boss had a huge problem with this because he wanted to control the technical information that I provided the 'big boss' when he called with questions.
The baby boss was so desperate to be included in the conversation with the executives that he often tried to take credit for the employee's conversation with them. Knowing that he wasn't kept in the loop all the time, he wanted the employee to recount the entire conversation every single time. "I followed his direction to the T. If big boss called me at 2 a.m. with a question, the baby boss got a call at 2:15, but with a rambling retelling of our conversation, which often exceeded the length of the first call," they explained. However, frustrated by these late-night calls, the baby boss demanded the recounting in an email. But that ended up hilariously.
"I created these emails that would rival a high schooler who had an assignment with a minimum word count. I’d sprinkle the important information in between long, flowing sentences so he was forced to read the whole thing if he wanted to know what I really spoke about," they mentioned. Eventually, the baby boss got tired of these calls and emails and demanded a "brief recap" following the calls. However, this meticulous overtime didn't go unnoticed by the finance team. The employee simply pointed fingers at the micromanaging boss. "Babyboss was eventually disciplined and was forced out, due in large part because of everything that happened with me," they concluded.
People were totally amused by this "malicious compliance" story. "The fact that there were actual consequences for a jerky boss was so satisfying. Usually, these petty tyrants just keep plodding along making their minions miserable. Thanks for a tale of justice!" said u/binneapolitan. "Good on you for billing those hours! Too many people would just call and count that as petty revenge," wrote u/Celestial_Scythe. "I rolled my eyes when I read about the emails until you mentioned that you were on the clock when writing them," added u/S2Charlie.
