ELLE Magazine just fired E. Jean Carroll for her rape allegation against Donald Trump

The magazine for women ultimately sided with the man. Despite all the progress we've made, Carroll still can't receive her due justice.

After the #MeToo movement took Hollywood by storm, women across the United States thought it would lead to positive change for victims of sexual harassment. However, it seems that little has changed. After writer E. Jean Carroll came forward with a sexual assault allegation against President Donald Trump, she received quite some backlash. This criticism came from the President himself as well as other skeptics. The latest critic, it appears, is none other than Carrol's now-former employer, ELLE Magazine. Due to her legal "scandal," the publication decided to let her go after working with the writer for over half a decade, NBC News reports.

Carroll took to Twitter in order to announce the news. "Because Trump ridiculed my reputation, laughed at my looks, and dragged me through the mud, after 26 years, ELLE fired me," she wrote. "I don't blame ELLE. It was the great honor of my life writing 'Ask E. Jean.' I blame Donald Trump." At ELLE Magazine, Carroll was a prolific and well-known advice columnist. Her column "Ask E. Jean" covered topics that were at the time taboo, such as sex and women empowerment. NBC's cable channel, America's Talking, went on to produce a talk show based on the column, for which Carroll was nominated for a Cable Ace Award.

According to a court filing submitted earlier this week on Tuesday, ELLE Magazine declined Carroll's contract renewal in December. This thus ends her "primary income." Her final 'Ask E. Jean' column was published on the magazine's website on November 22. The filing also makes note of an email she received from the executive managing editor of ELLE Erin Hobday. Sent on December 11, it states that Carroll would receive payment for the "five remaining columns" of her contract. Hobday wrote, "We and your readers so appreciate your many years of work for the magazine and the wonderful columns you contributed to our publication. We will miss you tremendously."

The writer's plight can perhaps best be summarized by a tweet posted by Niskanen Center employee Rachel Bitecofer. She stated, "Ultimately, ELLE Magazine fired E. Jean Carroll because she came forward with her rape allegation against the most powerful man in the world. In the end, a magazine for women chose the man." Caroll first came forward about her sexual assault in her 2019 book What Do We Need Men For?. An excerpt of this was published in New York Magazine, bringing her assault front and center in the media. While Carroll described the incident that took place in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room so many years ago as traumatic, Trump has only denied that it took place at all. On several occasions, the President has denied the allegations and has even gone so far as to claim he had never met Carroll. However, a photo of the pair alongside Carroll's former husband John Johnson at a 1987 party surfaced online. Despite this, Trump simply stated he had "no idea" who she even was.

Therefore, she sued Trump for defamation last year in November in New York State Court. At present, Carroll's legal counsel is waiting for the President to respond to requests for a DNA sample. Once she had gone public with her allegation, her lawyer Roberta Kaplan, had the black wool dress Carroll was wearing during the attack (and had stored safely since) tested for DNA. Trump's lawyers, of course, only wish to delay the lawsuit. Therefore, Kaplan asserted in a statement, "Our client filed this lawsuit to prove that Donald Trump lied about sexually assaulting her and to restore her credibility and reputation. From the very beginning, Trump has tried every tactic lawyers can think of to halt this case in its tracks and keep the truth from coming out."
