Boy’s 300-day Duolingo streak ended when he was hospitalized, so his mom asked the 'green owl' for help

Social media has its pros and cons, but sometimes it can work in wonderful ways. For instance, Sunny Chaos (@762cayuga), the mother of 10-year-old Cruze Wilson, took to X after her son lost his 301-day streak on Duolingo. Well, he had been hospitalized, which is why he missed his lessons, and after almost a year of dedication, lost his 300-day Duolingo streak. However, unable to see her son sad, Wilson's mom directly asked the company to help her son with some "Duo magic," and, surprisingly, the green owl answered. The post was shared on August 12, and it has since received over 16 million views online. 

Duolingo to the rescue

Chaos took a shot in the dark by posting her plea on X. All she wanted was for Wilson, her son, to get his 301-day streak. She explained in her post that he "was unexpectedly hospitalized and missed his lessons." But the good news was that he was back at home and recovering. However, Wilson was "heartbroken about losing his streak." Chaos asked, "Any chance some Duo magic can restore it?" Surprisingly, her plea reached the language-learning platform, and within minutes, Duolingo replied with positive news. 

'301-day streak repaired'

Well, the company asked Chaos for Wilson's Duolingo username so they could help him restore his streaks. Excited, Chaos responded with the details and added that her son joined the platform back in 2020. A few hours later, Duolingo came back with good news and announced in the comment section, "301-day streak repaired!" The company also added a few perks to Wilson's account, writing, "Threw in some gems and a Streak Shield too."

Maintaining a Duolingo streak has become a ritual and a source of pride for many users, including senior citizens. In fact, a report by the language platform revealed that 30% of users who maintained a 365-day streak were learners aged 60 and above. However, only 5% of learners aged 13 and 17 showed the same dedication. Going by these numbers, it was understandable why Wilson's 301-day streak meant so much to him.

The internet answers

Additionally, with the rise of social media, more people are turning to the internet for help. For example, a survey conducted by the American Red Cross (shared by PR Newswire) found that 39% of respondents who asked for help on social media expected it to arrive in less than an hour. Now, the data suggest people blindly trust social media when it comes to seeking help or advice. Similarly, Chaos also believed social media would do its job and help her get her son's streak back, and it proved her right. 

Meanwhile, reacting to Chaos' post, @velvetstarh commented, "Losing a 300-day streak because you were in the hospital is exactly the kind of exception Duolingo should make. Glad they brought it back." @davidrush wrote, "This is exactly the kind of situation streak freezes were made for. A 300+ day streak at 10 years old is seriously impressive, and losing it because you were hospitalized is heartbreaking. Hopefully Duolingo can work some Duo magic and restore it for him."
