Since the podcaster appeared confident enough in the tip to share it online, a couple tried to test its effectiveness in real life.
The internet is full of tips and advice on personal safety. However, since most of these tips may lack credibility, it's essential to exercise caution when applying them in real life. Many might not work in real situations and could even cause more harm than good. This is what a former royal marine named Robin (@dutchintheusa on TikTok) and his partner set out to test when they came across a podcaster's advice on women's safety in parking lots.
"And women, listen to this. This can save your life," the podcaster claimed in the stitched clip. "If you are in an underground parking lot or an above-the-ground parking lot and someone goes to attack you like, practice getting down flat as fast as you can. I can do it really quick, almost like doing a burpee, like drop face down and roll under your car or any other vehicle and hold onto the underside and scream your head off. In the history of the world, no woman has ever been raped underneath a car. Get under the car, hang on and if you scream, never just scream. People who hear it think that someone's joking around and scream words. Help, police, murder."
"'Help me,' scream words, so people can find you and keep yelling until someone comes to help you," he added. As the video continued to play, Robin and his partner set out to test the effectiveness of the man's safety tip. The woman tried different approaches to quickly get under her car when "attacked" by Robin but could never do so quickly enough. She even tried to hit him with her bag and crawl beneath the car, but nothing worked. During one attempt, she somehow managed to get under the car up to her shoulders, but Robin dragged her out again before she could go further inside. The couple tried everything the podcaster asked women to do in a dangerous situation, but ultimately gave it a thumbs down, noting that it didn’t work.
The video's caption read, "In theory, some safety tactics sound like they would be effective... In reality, it's a little different. It takes some time to wiggle under. In this case, situational awareness and self-defense would likely result in a better outcome." The video received more than 967k views and over 91k likes. People expressed their thoughts on the tip and shared their own experiences in the comments. @rsjn19 wrote, "I was always taught to yell fire. Because help means danger (people don't like danger.) And people wanna see where the fire is at." @SckullieBabyxx wrote, "Men shouldn’t be allowed to give this kinda advice."
@bellabee commented, "Take a class in self-defense. It builds confidence! But the best advice I heard about working multiple times is to be as loud as you can and to fight as hard and long as you can!" @kris.isabell remarked, "Unless you have a pickup, how can anyone just roll underneath their car? I couldn't get underneath mine even if someone pushed me!" @makeemcrymwah shared, "Yeah, I just made a batch of brownies an hour ago and half of it is already gone... I ain't fitting under a car." @dijana_777 expressed, "I have a Mini Cooper and in no way imaginable can I fit under that car, nobody can!"
