Parton surprised a terminally ill fan through Make-a-Wish Foundation and dedicated a popular song to him.
Meeting one's idol is a dream most people in the world want to fulfill. Therefore one of the most popular wishes for the Make-a-Wish Foundation is to meet a celebrity. LeGrand Gold did not need to go through the organization to reach his idol. Dolly Parton gave him a call and made his day in a matter of seconds, as reported by People. The moment she got to know that meeting her was on Gold's list who was suffering from cancer, she did not waste a single second and connected with him. She not only expressed her gratitude in return for the love he had for her, but the singer also dedicated a famous song to him altering the lyrics to include his name.
Gold was diagnosed with metastatic cancer in 2021. He and his family fought the disease head-on, taking the route of chemotherapy and radiation. Unfortunately, they have reached the end of the road. He was sent back to his home from the hospital to spend time with his family. It was a tough time for him and therefore his wife, Alice made a list that included all his wishes. “He was going through a really kind of down phase of just over everything,” she told KSL. “So [I] just got out the napkin and started saying, ‘What do you want to do? What do you want to do before you die?’”
There were 11 things on the list called “LG’s List of Living.” The first one was attending a March Madness game because he loves college football. He has already completed the wish to see Natalie Merchant performing in a concert. The man was also able to attend an NBA game but missed out on seeing Charles Barkley during a taping of “Inside the NBA” for TNT. Unfortunately, his health was continuously declining and he had to put a close to his travels. His wife did not give up on his most precious wish and put out a request for Dolly Parton to connect with him on social media. “I have gotten so many messages from all over the place,” she said “That’s been the most heartwarming thing. Even if he never gets to meet Dolly, we’re at the end of his life and all of these two strangers have come out…and reached out and said, ‘I will do what I can. I don’t know you, but we want to make this happen.'”
The request reached Dolly Parton and she agreed to meet her beloved fan. Just before Christmas, they got connected through a call, as reported by KSL. “She sang a song, put my name in the song. I feel like I’m immortal now,” Gold said about the chat. “That was really cool. It made me feel good.” Alice was beyond grateful for this gesture. "We've been flying above the silver lining for days," she said. "Out of the 11 items [on the list], we thought Dolly would be the impossible, but true to Dolly form, she once again reminds the world that dreams really do come true."
The endearing call was uploaded on YouTube. Parton addressed her fan as “LG,” and called herself “Dolly P.” “I’m just happy to know that I’ve got a fan that devoted and that I’ve had a chance to watch that journey all these years,” she says. “I’m just happy that we got to kind of have our journey together in this lifetime. I always want to make people happy with my music and with the things I do and the things I say and I’m just happy to know that I’ve touched your life in some way. So thank you for honoring me with that.” At the end, she swapped the lyrics of her famous song and crooned, “I will always love LG.”
