Dog who didn't get a single adoption application finds forever home after shelter's emotional post
The dog's post went viral overnight, and the shelter received more inquiries than they expected.
Sky, a three-year-old dog, entered Stafford County Animal Shelter in November 2022 and spent months there, waiting for her forever home. In fact, every time she left her kennel, she thought she was going home, but the shelter hadn't even gotten a single inquiry for her adoption. The animal shelter was desperate to find a home for Sky, so they posted her on Facebook with a heartbreaking adoption plea, and guess what? That worked!
The shelter said nobody had ever called them for Sky, not even to spend time with her. "We have posted her multiple times… still nothing. We understand she must be the only dog, but there has to be someone out there who belongs to Sky," they wrote. The animal shelter said that Sky is a wonderful companion who loves people and going for walks. "All of our long-term residents have found a family, and we think Sky’s turn is long overdue," they added. The post went viral overnight, and the shelter received more inquiries than they expected. And finally, Sky was adopted by a loving family. "She needed a home without any other animals in it and a fenced-in back yard for her safety. Thank you so much for making the drive to us to take this girl home," the shelter updated.
The social media plea reached a family in Newport, and they immediately contacted the shelter, asking for Sky. "We wanted to get information and see if she was still here this morning. It's weird having a dog because I have never had a dog," Donna Crowder told WSET. Her son, Joseph, who is autistic, got along well with Sky, she said. "We have been in the market for a dog, and when they said she was good with kids, I said, 'ok, I will make the drive," Crowder added. Dogs can be great companions, especially for kids and senior citizens. However, people often look for them in pet shops rather than shelter homes. Millions of dogs enter animal shelters around the world, but only a few are adopted. In fact, a survey found that 42% of people wanting a pet said they would not consider adopting from a shelter. Among the top reasons, 26% said they doubt that the shelters have the kind of dog they want, and 27% said they wanted a purebred dog, which are harder to find in shelters.
Meanwhile, people who had been following Sky's journey on Facebook were elated to hear her adoption news. For instance, Denise Cooper-Waters, who knew Sky, commented, "Another happy day to hear that Sky has been adopted. I will miss throwing the tennis ball to her and taking her for walks, but I’m so elated that she has a family to love and to take care of her. Thank you for adopting her!"
Keriann B. Sawinski wrote, "OMG. THAT'S AWESOME! GOOD LUCK SKY! The fact that no one wanted her for the longest time broke my heart, so seeing her being adopted makes me happy!" Katie Houghton said, "Her new mom and brother look like they’re going to be the perfect family for her! I cried hard when I saw her post yesterday; this is such great news!" Patty Lee commented, "Oh my goodness, the internet and social media in particular can really be great sometimes! I'm so happy for her and the family that adopted her!"
