Imagine thinking you've found a fairy-tale love, and suddenly, the man you are in love with turns out to be actually married and is a father of two. As nightmarish as it sounds, Ellis Mae (@ellismaee), a fitness influencer and entrepreneur, experienced just that when she woke up to a shocking confession from a stranger. On June 26, 2026, she turned to Instagram to recount her past relationship with a con artist who had been quietly stealing her valuables to impress his wife. Her post has since received over 5,000 likes online.

His wife slid into her DMs

The story began when Mae started dating a man who seemed like the perfect partner ever. He did everything for her, from buying her gifts to taking care of her. The only problem was his age. Mae believed he was 26 but refused to let the age factor affect their relationship. However, her illusion of a perfect relationship shattered when a woman, claiming to be her boyfriend's wife, DMed her on Instagram.

"Hey girly, are you by chance seeing him? Because I'm his wife. We have two kids together," the text read. Shocked, Mae confronted her partner. At first, her ex-boyfriend deflected her questions. He said, "I don't have a wife. I've never had a wife... She's just my baby mama." Moreover, the man tried to blindside her, saying he really wanted to be with her forever. "He looks me dead in the eyes, literally grabs me, and says, 'Babe, you are endgame,'" Mae recalled.

His double life exposed

Thankfully, Mae didn't fall for his excuses and told her to leave the house immediately. As her ex-boyfriend left, she contacted his wife and asked whether she was telling the truth. To her surprise, the woman sent Mae her marriage certificate and also revealed that he was lying about his age, job, and almost everything else. She also realized her ex-boyfriend had stolen her expensive Prada sunglasses along with other things to gift his wife. Moreover, Mae discovered that the man was also broke, with only about $1,000 left in his pocket after paying child support.

Dating lies

Lying about job, wealth, and personal life has become a trend recently, especially with the rise of online dating. In fact, according to a Pew Research Center survey, a striking 71% of Americans feel it is very common for people to lie to their date to make themselves feel more desirable. Meanwhile, another 50% of people feel like many people set up fake accounts and profiles to scam or mislead others. Mae's experience combined with research data highlights how common lying has become in the dating space and why people need to be extra cautious while dating.

The people in the comments also shared similar experiences with Mae. @chelsiicarter wrote, "This is insane, LMAO. I have to appreciate the wife for letting you know he was stealing as well." At the same time, @elysaxoxo commented, "Be careful, girl. It’s a good thing his wife/baby mama messaged you. Imagine down the line you two were together for a minute and you never found out? Imagine other girls he’s done this to. I’m saying you dodged a bullet for sure, and shout out to that baby mama."
