Living with multiple sclerosis hasn’t been easy for 38-year-old Cody Guinn of Oregon. Diagnosed in 2015, his mobility has gradually declined, and he now relies on a power wheelchair and regular physical therapy sessions two to three times a week. But when it came to proposing to the love of his life, Maisy Kucera, Guinn told his followers on TikTok under the handle @guinnsjourneyzz that nothing would stop him from getting down on one knee. The video of the proposal went viral, racking up more than 1.6 million views, 256,100 likes, and over 720 comments.

On June 19, during one of his therapy sessions, Kucera, 24, was asked to assist. As she stood in front of him, Guinn steadied himself beside a box and revealed a small ring box in his palm. For Kucera, it was the last thing she expected. "It was the perfect setup for the proposal," she said. Guinn explained that therapy was the only setting where he could safely make the movement, and he used that chance to create a memory neither of them would forget. "There are certain traditions I grew up with that I still respect," Guinn told Newsweek, "Proposing on one knee is a sign of respect. I think it’s important for younger generations to see that play out." He added that even though the gesture was painful, it was "so worth it."

Multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease, causes the immune system to attack the protective myelin around nerves in the brain and spinal cord. It disrupts signals the body needs to control functions like vision, sensation, and movement. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, it most often strikes young adults and comes with symptoms ranging from muscle weakness and fatigue to balance problems, vision loss, and cognitive issues. Research shows that targeted rehabilitation programs can improve mobility, balance, and fatigue in people with MS, which made Guinn’s desire to kneel for his proposal possible.
Despite these challenges, Guinn and Kucera are planning their wedding for October 2025. "We have felt immense love and support from our online community," Kucera said, adding, "We hope to continue to connect with people from all around the world who can relate to our story." The video touched a lot of viewers, who filled the comment section with words of admiration. @sephie commented, "The doctor in the back is probably thinking this is his reason why. Congratulations!!" @avebehr chimed in, "As a PT, this is why we do the job. Being able to help someone achieve a goal is one of the most meaningful moments. We go through years of school, mountains of debt, and hours of thankless work for this kind of stuff. Congrats."
@ciarahathaway21 wrote, "As a therapist, I would literally be sobbing in the back and unable to contain myself. Congratulations to you both." @inkedslytherin added, "In a tank top, under fluorescent lighting… still the most romantic proposal I’ve ever seen!!!!" @civy.lynn_ said, "If I were the doctor, I don’t think I’d be able to even be there. I’d be way too excited and not able to contain the surprise." @kgraf22 wrote, "Bawling, because you know he put in so much effort to perfect that stance. Congratulations."
