A temporary dental hygienist walked into a clinic and found something so alarming, she refused to treat a single patient
A temporary dental hygienist said she was shocked by what she found during a shift at an underserved dental clinic. Ann Taylor Lawrence (@anntaylor.lawrence) experienced this firsthand when she arrived at the place. There, she discovered moldy water lines and disinfectant that had expired in 2019, among other troubling conditions. Disturbed by what she saw, she decided to leave the clinic immediately. She later shared her experience on TikTok on July 18, 2026, and the clip received over 544,000 likes.

Fresh eyes, old supplies
Arriving for what should have been a standard morning temp shift, Lawrence walked into a facility frozen in time and in terms of sanitation standards. The workstations were stocked with CaviWipes and disinfectant spray bottles that expired back in 2019. Expecting basic infection control, she was instead greeted by severe surface neglect before even encountering a single patient. Despite these immediate red flags, she decided to fix things a little bit to at least make the situation manageable for the day. But she couldn't have been more wrong in her life.
The Home Depot sterilization
That is because when she went to retrieve sterile instruments, the actual reality of the clinic's practices set in. Instead of a functional sterilization area, dirty, blood-caked tools sat submerged in a Home Depot bucket filled up with tap water and dish soap. "I was like, is this, like, are ya'll joking?" She said. Nonetheless, when she pushed the staff further, they casually explained that the autoclave was broken, instructing her to simply "wipe it with Cavi" and pack the instruments into bags. But this wasn't the end.
Fungus in the delivery
The contamination extended to the equipment meant for direct patient contact. Opening a tub of topical anesthetic, she found mold growing over a forgotten cotton roll inside the container. Somehow, this wasn't even the worst part, as what appeared to be black mold was visible inside the water hoses meant to spray directly into the patients' mouths, raising serious concerns about patient safety. This was the last straw for Lawrence, as she refused to compromise patient safety.
Confronting the front desk
So, she gathered her belongings and walked straight to the front desk. There she loudly announced, "I'm not going to do this." When the receptionist asked if she intended to report the facility, she gave her an angry look and stated that, of course, she was going to do that. Then the receptionist warned her that she wouldn't be getting paid. However, that was the last thing on Lawrence's mind at that point as she stormed off from the facility. She later clarified that the clinic was betraying the trust of the people, and she wasn't going to hurt somebody for a paycheck.
Distrust in the healthcare system
The incident also comes at a time when Americans' trust in the healthcare system appears to be weakening. According to a Gallup survey, only about 36% of Americans have a somewhat positive view of the industry, while a staggering 51% of people view it negatively, as of 2025. At the same time, another Gallup study reveals that the public's trust in the ethical standards of medical doctors has dropped to 53%, the lowest since the mid-1990s. This highlights the decreasing trust of the common people toward the industry.
'You did right'
That is exactly why people praised Lawrence for taking a stand. @ughkirsten_ wrote, "Call the state board, call the dental board, call the medical board, EVERYONE. THE NEWS. You ARE doing the RIGHT THING." Meanwhile, @summermackk commented, "If they got Cavi wipes existing from 2019, that means they were barely using them to begin with. If an office that actually cleans and wipes things down is constantly reordering them because we go through them so fast."
