Daughter empowers retired shop-owner-dad to achieve his dream of teaching math

Often, parents don’t hesitate to sacrifice their dreams to help their children grow. However, like parents, children are equally responsible for caring for them as they grow older. Realizing this, a daughter, Sam Mehreteab, took the initiative to help her father achieve his long-lost dream. The father, a retired shop owner named Mehreteab Yohannes—who goes by @MathsWithYohannes on YouTube—started teaching mathematics online. With the assistance of his tech-savvy daughter, he began streaming his valuable lessons on YouTube, which later made him popular, as reported by Good Morning America.

In the video by GMA, Yohannes could be seen teaching his students by solving complex math problems on a whiteboard. The retired shop owner has always dreamt of becoming an educator until his daughter helped him get a step closer to achieving that dream. Before becoming a professional teacher online, he happily gave mathematics lessons to his children at home. His passion for teaching has brought him this far, earning him global recognition and over 187k subscribers on his YouTube channel.

Notably, Yohannes touches on typical mathematics topics such as algebra, equations, the Pythagorean theorem, and many others in his video lectures. Sam handles most of the recording and production of these tutorials before taking them live on the internet. Additionally, while most of these lessons are taught in English, some also serve the needs of native Tigrinya speakers, as the father has roots in Ethiopia. The live-streamed classes also included brief moments of motivation from the educator.

Yohannes was seen dressed like any ordinary teacher, donning a sky-blue shirt, a grey sweater, and black trousers, along with typical metallic-framed glasses. He spent most of his day giving online lessons, interacting with his students, and assigning them homework.
