Her date wanted something in return to cover the tab, so she decided to teach him a lesson

The internet is full of wildly uncomfortable dating stories, but what happened to MeloDak (@melodak53) easily makes it to the top of that list. After sitting through dinner together, the moment the check landed on the table, her date made an audacious move. He told her they would split the $58 bill unless she agreed to "go home" with him. He brazenly claimed it was not fair to pay if he wasn't "getting anything out of it." Refusing to let this entitlement slide, MeloDak pulled out her phone to record. She later posted the exchange on TikTok on January 20, 2026, amassing more than 424,500 likes.
@melodak53 I went on the worst date of my life. No man has ever treated me like this before. Like a piece of meat. #worstdate #firstdate #storytime #foryoupage #dating ♬ original sound - MeloDak
The pleasantries ended abruptly once the server placed the receipt on the table. Without hesitation, the man questioned whether she was returning to his place or heading back on her own, making it clear that a refusal meant dividing the tab. "So, I have to pay for my half if I'm not going home with you?" she asked, seeking to clarify his reasoning. He answered affirmatively without any remorse, stating that it wouldn't be fair otherwise, since he "wouldn't get anything out of it." Visibly shocked by his response, MeloDak asked him if he treated women like this, to which he replied, "Not all the time."

Stunned by this complete lack of respect, MeloDak immediately pulled out her phone to document the encounter. When she demanded to see the $58 balance, she openly mocked his financial hesitation and decided to pay the full amount on her own card. "Oh, $58. You don't got $58 in your bank? That's fine. I am gonna get my card." While preparing her payment, she informed him that she was recording. "I recorded this whole conversation because I want people to see how shi**y men are out here," she said, frustrated by his transactional mindset.

Uncomfortable with the lens pointed in his direction, the man attempted to de-escalate the tension by questioning her manners. "You know that's not very respectful," he argued. He insisted that she had no right to film him without consent. Unmoved by his defense, she told him that she was recording herself and that it was a matter of personal protection. Noting that other patrons had started snickering at his embarrassing display, she called out for the waitstaff to settle the bill so she could leave immediately.

This instance, unfortunately, isn't uncommon. According to a Chapman University study, 165 men admitted that if they pay for a date, they think that a woman should offer them intimacy in return. This number is specifically high in the younger generation, with 21% of men aged between 18 and 25 admitting this. Additionally, a striking 64% of men also believe that after the first few dates, women should help pay expenses. Meanwhile, 34% of men also believe that if their partner made more money than they do, then she should pay for dates.

The people, however, believe what MeloDak's date did to her was unacceptable and rightly so. @tarachandler0 pointed out, "That’s coercion, and coercion is a form of assault!" At the same time, @paigessarchive noted, "I don’t get anything out of it. You got a date and quality time out of it? That’s so weeeeeiirrrrrddddd."
