He accused her of putting men down to feel powerful

A relationship built on humor and heavy banter usually signals genuine comfort. In fact, it makes it all too easy to assume that you're both laughing at the same absurdities. That false sense of confidence is why a woman (u/pomumprohibitum) ignored her 31-year-old dating match's deadpan claim that only "real men pay" for the dinner. Well, she thought it was an obvious parody. However, that joke lost its charm after the dinner date, when she spent $4 on soda and popsicles. What followed was a series of unhinged texts, as she took to Reddit on August 29, 2026 to narrate the entire story, receiving over 7,500 upvotes.
I accidentally destroyed a man’s masculinity with a popsicle

The couple had matched on a dating app and were planning to meet when he mentioned who he thought should pay on dates. The woman said she prefers splitting the bill because otherwise she feels like she owes the other person. The man, 31, however, disagreed, saying only real men pay on dates. "If you pay, you’re basically saying I’m not good enough," he added. The author let his remarks slide, thinking he was being sarcastic. However, that changed when the couple met at a restaurant for their first date.
The evening started smoothly as the couple headed to a local Georgian spot, but the bill quickly brought the rigid philosophy back into focus. Nevertheless, to avoid an argument at the dinner table, the woman decided to let the man cover the check. It seemed like a harmless compromise at first, but things quickly changed after dinner.

On their way back, the woman purchased sodas and popsicles for them. "I came back, handed him his, and said something like, 'I know you didn’t want me to pay earlier, but at least let me return the favor with this,'" the author recalled. Her date accepted it but immediately went quiet. The woman couldn't understand the sudden shift in his behavior until she reached home and received a text message from him.
"You totally disrespected me. I told you what paying meant to me. You just had to assert dominance," he told her. The man further accused the woman of being the type who needed to emasculate a man to feel powerful. He also threw in an armchair psychological diagnosis, saying that she was a "manipulative narcissist" who wanted him to look weak. Surprisingly, even after reading his messages, she still expected him to admit that he was joking, but that never happened. "A grown man experienced what appeared to be a complete crisis of masculinity because I bought him a popsicle and a soda, literally spent around $4 on him," the woman recalled.
This incident stems from the decades-old debate regarding who should pay on the first date. According to a LendingTree study, 54% of men believe they should cover it. However, only 26% of women said it should be split. The report also found that 34% of Gen Z believe that the person who asked for the date should cover the cost. Similarly, a similar share of Gen Z (32%) feel the costs should be split. In the Reddit story, the woman respected her date's decision to cover their dinner, but things spiraled out of control when he accused her of asserting dominance by buying him dessert.

Meanwhile, reacting to the post, u/leisa2100 commented, "That is insane, and unfortunately there are so many more like him. To these men, a woman with even the tiniest bit of agency is a threat. It’s all about control and their perceived loss of it." u/LookAtMaDog wrote, "Sorry that happened to you. You wanted to see the good in him; you tried, and tried...and tried."
