Her dad died before her wedding. When the photos were developed, he was in them

Mia Chard (@madmnc)’s friends always knew her father, Doug, as a patient, caring, and gentle man, even though her friends found him intimidating. On the evening of June 5, 2018, she went to his house to mow his lawn, unaware it would be their last time together. At 1:52 pm the following day, Doug passed away. When Chard, now 43, got married on May 2 this year, she brought his 1979 film camera to capture a few vintage-style wedding photos. As she flipped through these photos, she realized that they contained his father, not figuratively, but actually, according to a June 25, 2026, report by TODAY. What started as an erroneous camera roll will now remain an unforgettable and magical memory for Chard for a lifetime.

From mishap to a magical memory

When the day of her wedding arrived, everything was perfectly arranged by her mom, who’s a wedding planner, with her elder brother officiating the ceremony. If something was missing, it was her dad. “I wanted him with me,” she recalled. “And he was.” Thanks to his vintage Rollei film camera, Doug made his presence felt in a way she could never have dreamed of.

Chard had asked her brother to use her late father's camera to capture whatever he could from the wedding ceremony. After a few days, when the developed photographs arrived by email, she was tickled pink. The first image she saw was her father from her brother’s 1999 graduation ceremony. It was just a technical error. She had accidentally installed an old camera roll, so the images were overlaid with layers of these old photos.

Liberated from the snow globe

Chard lived a “snow globe life.” As a child, she was bullied for being overweight. She grew up with the pain of perpetual singlehood, something she describes as “death by a thousand cuts.” Yet, she always cherished the extra time she had with her parents, especially her dad. Depressed and grieving, Chard started sharing her experience of loneliness, pain, and singlehood on social media. That’s when serendipity knocked on her door, and Perez reached out to her. They decided to tie the knot on May 2 and that’s when she felt her father’s presence in a way she had never felt before, through the vintage photographs. "In one image, Chard noticed how the overlapping exposures framed her as she walked down the aisle," Today reports. “Of course, he made it to my wedding day. I want to believe I have the pictures to prove it,” she exclaimed.

Role of a father's presence

Research indicates that a father’s presence is vital for a child, especially a daughter. Fathers not only help a daughter feel psychologically secure, but also program her mind to achieve success and choose adult relationships. When a woman is made to hunger for a father’s presence, it usually takes a toll on her romantic relationships, and she usually suffers from hyper-competitiveness and depressive symptoms.

A study published in Frontiers in Psychology reported that 26% of girls experienced psychological distress when their father’s presence was insufficient in fulfilling their needs. As the Institute of Family Studies stated, fathers “give daughters hope for romantic relationships,” something which Chard didn’t experience until quite late in life.

Beautiful coincidence

Reflecting on Chard’s story, viewers said this is “beyond special,” something that carries beauty and symbolism. @curlyoats said, “I personally believe our crossed loved ones have unique ways of communicating they’re still with us. This is very beautiful.” @tahoe92951 remarked, “This was not a coincidence. There are no coincidences in life. It was his daughter getting married, and he needed to be by your side. These pictures are beautiful! And he was there to share your love and happiness. He didn’t want to miss this day.”
