Dad stands up for daughter when wife tries to stop her from using the bathroom at their house

A teen girl's father took a stand for her when his wife attempted to stop her from using the only working bathroom in the house for a peculiar reason.

As long as the family bathroom stays clean, all is well. But what happens when a family member objects to others using it? A dad, u/AITADE33434, took to Reddit to share an incident where his wife wanted his daughter to stop using the main bathroom for an unusual reason. He explained that he and his wife have been together for three years and live with his 14-year-old daughter from his previous marriage, as well as his 16-year-old stepson, who gets along well with his daughter.

"We have two bathrooms in the house. My daughter only uses the smaller one. Since, it's always available, unlike the main bathroom that, my stepson and wife often use," the post started. Then the dad continued about how he had received some money and decided to invest it into renovating the smaller bathroom in the house for his daughter. Meanwhile, she started using the main bathroom as an alternative. "There were no issues until my wife pulled me aside saying my daughter's been leaving period products inside the bathroom and it wasn't right cause my stepson would see them," the post mentioned.

When he asked his wife for clarification, he discovered that his daughter had been disposing of her used menstrual products in the trashcan of the main bathroom. He tried to explain to his wife that there was nothing wrong with that, but she decided to drop the matter, calling him ignorant. "This morning she looked upset and told me that my stepson went inside the bathroom after my daughter got out and probably saw her used pads in the bathroom. I asked if she meant the trashcan and it was confirmed. She then proceeded to tell me to ask my daughter to stop using the main bathroom even though the small one is still in the process of being renovated," the dad continued.

That was when he lost his cool and told his wife that she was making ridiculous and unreasonable demands. He reminded his wife that it was his daughter's house too and she had nowhere to go if she couldn't use the main bathroom. "We started arguing back and forth until she said she'd talk to her but I told her to stop it. She just kept giving me the cold shoulder for hours now even though my stepson said nothing about this issue as she claims it to be. My wife said she was trying to be a parent but I treat her as an outsider to my daughter," the post added.

The dad admitted that he might have been too harsh to make his wife realize that she was being unreasonable. "My wife is an incredibly private person but that doesn't mean she can get others to follow. To answer your question: The trashcan we have has a lid. It's a step-on trashcan that doesn't require hands. My stepson isn't even aware of what his mom's talking about. He can barely look around, he always has his phone glued to his face and he doesn't pay attention to anything," the post concluded. Reddit users sided with the dad and supported him for standing up for his daughter.

u/SydeSplitter remarked, "Your wife is raising her son to be one of those weird dudes who have a gag reflex when he hears the word tampon." u/janewilson90 wrote, "Her son lives in a world in which people who menstruate exist. He's going to have to deal with it. There's nothing wrong with him seeing a box of tampons or pads." u/Sfb208 commented, "It doesn't sound like the son actually has an issue with it, just that his mother thinks it might be a problem for him. It makes this whole situation even more ridiculous." u/Unlucky-Profession41 added, "She was trying to parent the wrong kid. The daughter didn't leave the used products on the toilet tank or seat. It was in the trash. The wife should use this as a good teaching moment for her son."
