He continued disappearing for six months until it started reflecting on his job

More often than not, people judge even before understanding the whole story. A man who goes by Fiz (@e_mindsethq) on X shared one such incident in which everyone at the office made the worst assumptions about a co-worker who went missing from the office every day between 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Now, the situation continued for six months, but nobody questioned him until it started reflecting on his work. Furious, his boss confronted him, but the heartbreaking reason behind his disappearance unravelled a father's hidden grief. Fiz recalled the story on April 28, and the post has received 4.1 million views on his page.
We had a guy at work who vanished every day at 3pm.

Laptop shut. Gone. No explanation.
He’d reappear at 4:30 like nothing happened.
This went on for six months.
We figured it had to be something serious—maybe medical. Nobody asked.
But things started slipping. Deadlines…
Every day, the employee vanished between 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., but no one questioned it, assuming he had a medical emergency to attend to. However, his daily disappearance started to affect his performance at work. "...things started slipping. Deadlines missed. He even skipped two client calls once," Fiz recalled. Exasperated, the boss confronted him about his mysterious daily disappearance from the office. "Where are you going every day?" the boss asked; to this, the employee replied without giving away details, "Handling something personal." Next, when the boss questioned him for prioritizing personal work during office hours, he just looked at the clock and left, saying, "It’s 3 pm," as if that explained everything. Gossip started spreading around the workplace. People thought he was having an affair, or maybe giving interviews, but the truth was far more serious than everyone anticipated.
We assumed he was having an affair.

Or sneaking out for job interviews.
We were wrong.
He was picking up his daughter from school.
His wife had left the year before.
The custody agreement said 3:15 pickup. No aftercare. No flexibility. The court wouldn’t budge.
He asked to…
When things escalated, the employee requested a different shift, but HR refused. "It sets a precedent," they said, eventually putting the employee on a PIP (Performance Improvement Plan). Having no other choice, he left his job, but his exit interview changed how his colleagues looked at him forever. The employee explained that his wife left him a year ago and that he had to pick up his daughter from school at 3:15 p.m. He had no access to after-school care, and on top of that, the court refused him any flexibility. The employee's confession left Fiz and all his colleagues to learn a profound lesson: "'Disappearing' doesn’t always mean what you think. Not everyone with a secret is stealing time — some people are just out of options."

Raising a child isn't easy, especially for single parents who constantly juggle childcare duties and career ambitions. A study across 638 single parents (by Single Parent Rights) found that 81% of respondents were unable to work 30 hours per week due to overwhelming responsibilities. The majority of single parents confessed that managing household chores, family, and professional commitments alone restricts them from working longer hours.
Moreover, the respondents emphasized the lack of childcare, work flexibility, and single-parent employment discrimination hampering their careers. Similarly, another survey of 3,000 single parents (by Careerminds) found that almost half of the respondents (44%) had to decline job interviews due to strict schedules. Additionally, two-thirds of single parents admitted to having contemplated applying for jobs, fearing inflexible schedules.
We judge routines without knowing the reason behind them...and it's bad culture fr

Too often we assume the worst instead of showing grace. A little empathy and flexibility could have changed everything. Let's lead with understanding, not suspicion.

Meanwhile, the comment section received a mixed response from netizens; for instance, @ccstorm58 commented, "I'm torn on this. Yes, he is in a bad spot. But as a company, you can't miss deadlines. Also, not far from your coworkers, as they will also see the effects of the missed deadlines." Similarly, @thetimes_24 said, "The issue isn’t 3 pm. It's zero explanation."
