People grieve in different ways, but timing matters too. A woman who goes by u/thatkitchenwitch just lost her mother to cancer in late July. While she was still grieving her mom, her mother’s husband said something unbelievable to her when he handed her her mother’s ashes. 54 days after her mother’s death, he sent her a photo showing that he had followed through with his plans to date again. The post was shared on October 2 and received 27,000 upvotes and 1,200 comments.

Missed 30th anniversary

The author's mom passed away in late July after a long battle with cancer. When her stepdad handed her the urn that contained her mother's ashes, he said that he was going to look for his third wife. She was stunned by how heartless his comment was. At her mother’s funeral, the woman said her own husband began physically moving her away. She was confused until she heard her stepdad telling other attendees that he wasn’t going to wait to move on. The worst part was that her mother and stepdad had been married for almost 30 years. She passed away right before their 30th anniversary.

Moving on too fast

The author's loss was already devastating, and hearing her stepdad talk that way made it worse. But he was not done yet. 54 days after her mother passed, he sent her a photo. She thought it was a photo from one of his trips. Apparently, he kept to his word and sent her a photo of himself and his "new girl." She concluded, "54 days after she passed. Not even a month after her funeral."

Dating after loss

For the daughter, hearing her stepdad announce his plans at her mother’s funeral added to an already painful loss. A 1996 study using data from the San Diego Widowhood Project found that, 25 months after a spouse’s death, 61% of the men and 19% of the women studied had remarried or entered a new romantic relationship.” In a July 2026 online survey of 645 widowed adults by matchmaking company Tawkify, respondents who had dated again reported waiting an average of two years before their first date.

Someone else's problem

Netizens could not believe the stepdad's audacity. u/SierraStar7 commented, "If I’m reading this correctly, shoutout to your husband for trying to shield you from hearing what your mom’s husband was saying by moving you. Your mom’s husband is a piece of sh*t. He’s someone else’s problem now, and thankfully he’s no longer part of your family." u/pinktunacan wrote, "To a lot of men, marriage is nothing but a convenience and a tool to make their life easier. He has to quickly find himself another ‘tool’ because he is incompetent and incapable of doing anything himself. I'm very sorry for your mother, and she deserved better. Don't worry too much about the piece of sh*t because he's not worth your time or feelings."
